It's almost time for Memphis in May again!

Memphis is known for a few things...  Of course one of the first things people think of is Elvis. (I guess the runner up to that would be Elvis marrying you in Vegas - but I'll say I hear people say 'Elvis' first when they talk about Memphis.) Then there's the home of the Blues, Beale Street, Gibson Guitars, BBQ, I could keep going.

But what I want to share with you today is a feeling of Memphis in May.

Memphis in May and the Memphis Bridge

I took this picture a couple of years ago. I was walking down Riverside Drive toward the South entrance to the festival. In the background you can see the M bridge. I can never remember the official name of the bridge. I think maybe Hernando/Desoto Bridge. But this bridge is definitely a spot to remember in Memphis. It lights up at night and of course is crosses over the Mississippi River.

After a long trip driving - if you are coming home through Arkansas towards Memphis you can cross this bridge into Tennessee and into Memphis. On such a trip, I see the bridge and know that we are almost home.

Memphis in May is a month long festival filled with lots of different events.

  • The Music Festival spans several days of many different bands playing at several stages day and night. This is usually held the first weekend.

  • The BBQ Festival is a Barbeque cook-off contest. This is held over another long weekend. Various teams (companies) set up tents and compete for the best bbq. For me - the images that stick in my mind for the bbq - are all of the people driving around town towing their cookers behind them. I've never seen that except in Memphis. Literally the pork takes so long to cook it just right that people have to tow their cookers to the site.

  • One of the final events of Memphis in May is the Sunset Symphony. (The picture above was actually taken on my way to this event). You can bring picnic baskets and blankets and go sit in the park and listen to the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The evening ends with a big fireworks display.

Memphis in May has a little something for everyone. I saw this picture on my computer today and felt a little nostalgic and then remembered that Memphis in May is almost here again.
