Despite a torrential downpour that hit the Occoquan River Festival in the early afternoon everyone who helped plan and participate in the event will call it a success.
The American Spirit sailed into Belmont Bay right on time and there was a line waiting to take off on the first water taxi to Occoquan Regional Park at 11 am. By 1 pm the Children's Science Museum had counted 250 visitors through the interactive trailer.
Now I will have to say that if I didn't know it already it was reinforced today that trying to hold down a canopy with a metal frame in the middle of a lightening storm is not a good idea. A small static electricity shock made us realize that we were not in the right place to ride out the storm. The group of us huddled under the canopy decided to bail and I ended up hosting volunteers wrapped in towels at my home while our clothes tumbled in the drier!
In addition to all of the normal activities that were going on at the festival we had 20 travel writers from all over the country that joined us at HarborSide condominiums to learn more about Belmont Bay and the history of the area. Hopefully they will have some great things to say about the Occoquan River area in upcoming reports.
So as I finish up my day I wanted to share a few photos that I took as we were setting up.
We have a number of other big events coming up in the Occoquan River Communities in the near future and as a member of the committee involved in the promotion of the ORC you can rest assured that I will keep everyone up to date with the latest details. Sometimes being an insider has its perks!
