Fall Into Color ~ Trends for Fall 2008

By
Home Stager with Creative Home Expressions

If you've started receiving your Fall/Winter clothing catalogs, you are ahead of the game in what colors will be the trend in interior decorating this Fall and into 2009. The colors from the Fall fashion lines transition to the colors we see as trends in home décor.  It is not unusual to ask a client what colors they feel good wearing, because you can translate those same colors used in clothing lines into the home.

Reds will be split between the strong blue based and yellow based hues.

Orange continues to show up with brown-downed shades, but also include a brighter tangerine and an updated coral.

Yellow will range from bright to antique golds.

Green continues to be widely used, in all hues, taking its influence from nature.  Greens create a cool, calming feeling and give you that outdoor connection.

Blues are a constant.  While robin's egg blues are declining a bit, there are softer tints of blue along with bold bright blues.  The newer versions of navy are considered on the formal side.

Purple more of a red based raspberry like hue, as opposed to the blue based purples that have been previously popular.

Brown is getting a little bit lighter with sand and tan colors.  As with the greens, the nature inspired browns are still being used.

Long term, the trends are forecasting neutrals, the spa-like blues and nature based greens, although they are grayed-down and earthy. So, if you want to be a trendsetter in home décor, just check out the fashion catalogs - the color of that sweater you like so much may wind up being the color on your walls.

Carole ~ Thanks!  You are already on your way just with the fact that you have color - and you seem to be happy about it!

This is interesting. While I might not be up on what is coming in or going out of style as it relates to color, I know what I like. I am a fan of the deep colors, deep blues, reds and I like the purple in your example, though it could overwhelm (think, the Barney effect). As for the pale colors, especially those blues in that photo, I am not a fan at all! Wait, I do like pale yellow. Anyway, that is my color take.

Rich ~ You could use those colors that you like in your home too.  They would look great in pillows or throws, especially with the chillier weather on its way.  Thank you for your take! : )

Love your photos as examples of the color trends.     I totally agree that if you look in a client's closet you know what they will love in their home.

Connie ~ Right, that can be the easiest way when they say they are not sure what colors they like.

Great advice Kathy!  Maybe with the more neutral colours being on trend now for a while, more homeowners will pick those.  It would sure make our job as stagers easier, since sometimes homeowners don't want to repaint when selling.

Great post!  Design trends flow through all areas of design.  It is what we see available as consumers that makes us want to change all our stuff (clothing, cars, paint.......)

I love the fall colors so this is MY TIME OF YEAR.. I tend to use these colors alot in staging but love when I can work with a home that has the blue/brown decor going on. We get a chance as stagers to reinvent ourselves on every home. What fun!

Cindy ~ I find that I am drawn to those colors that have the grey in them, maybe it's softer looking, I'm not sure, but I do like them.
