Ode to the Olympics and Family Time every 4 Years

By
Real Estate Agent with Associate Broker, Momentum Realty

My family loves the Olympics!  They don't care about the politics, they only care about injuries that might keep their favorite athletes from competing.  Not politically correct, but the truth!

Once every four years you can find us all cheerfully scattered around the family room rooting for the 'home team.' There are no complaints of boredom, or 'forced' family time.  The kids talk about the upcoming events for weeks. They scour the paper and watch endless re-runs of competition footage.

They can remember every Summer Olympics since about the age of 5--and they talk about them.  I find this astounding!  If they had this kind of recall with history or science, their exams would be much easier!

It is a little bittersweet as my oldest has just graduated from high school. The next time the Olympics are on, she will have just graduated from college (we hope :)).  It will be interesting to see if she will watch the 2012 games with us or if she will be with her friends.

Whatever happens in the future, you will find our family firmly fixed in front of the TV until this spectacle that is the Olympic Games is over.

Well it at least gets us off the Presidential Election for a short while (excpt the commercials) Love the Olympics too but the kids are not into it like we were... To many video games, I guess!

Holly -

What's the most amazing thing is that these athletes are really kids - often, very young - and they are at the top of their game!

This supersedes the spectacle, in my opinion.

And, although I often tire of some of the events, and wonder how some countries on this planet can truly survive without 162 baseball games each summer, I am a big fan!

Roll on, U.S.A.!

Cheers to that Holly!  We love the Olympis.  From the first night with Popcorn and the Opening ceremony, which was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING this year!!!  To the final event.  We are glued to the Tube at night.  Makes work more of a struggle, but worth it in my opinion.  The DVR helps a little this Olympics.  Great post!

Hi Holly.  I love the Olympics and the wide variety of sporting events.  I have been part of the Olympic development program in my state (years ago) and really appreciate all the hard work these kids put into their skills.  The ones who earn the right to compete at the highest level are the best of the best... and not all earn a medal.  The medal winners (regardless of country) deserve the recognition they get before the world.
