I just read an article on CNN.com about small businesses feeling the pain of this miserable economy. What a downer...if you let it! But as I read the article I was pleased to see some good suggestions how to survive this so-called recession.
Here's the article: http://money.cnn.com/2008/08/15/smallbusiness/smallbiz_optimism_down.fsb/index.htm?postversion=2008081510
We all know doom and gloom sells more than optimism. In my opinion, we can't be oblivious to market conditions, but we can choose to be more optimistic in how we present our views to others. For example, the author of this article (Emily Maltby) could have started her article with something like this:
Small business owners who continue to market with focus and determination are finding clients willing, able and ready to buy. Successful small business owners realize that customers drive profits, so there's really no benefit to hunkering down and waiting out the storm.
OK, so I'm not a journalist but I think you see the point. Emily ended her article with optimism and hope and some good suggestions...but to "sell" the drama of her story, it's doom and gloom for the lead paragraphs.
Here's my hope YOU for today. Don't let bad news get you down. Look for ways you can use this economy to prosper. Don't run and hide. Do some research on low-cost marketing. Make sure you take advantage of your networks (Chambers, BNIs, Toastmasters, friends, family, etc.). Stay focuses on your 10 year goal and your life-long vision and you should survive and even thrive!
