What About Those Granite Countertops? Could They Contain Radon?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Homes Arizona Real Estate LLC

I received an email from a homebuyer just yesterday asking me whether I'd heard anything about problematic radon in kitchen granite countertops. I replied that I had not heard, but would do some research. I was surprised when I googled it because there were several articles dealing with that issue, most of them dated July 2008.

I searched around and came across an article in snopes.com, the website that provides us with the inside information of whether a rumor is true or not true. Well, it is true; however, I wanted to know if there was a testing for radontest, or a way to tell whether the granite you have in your home/and in mine, is emitting this radon. This article provides information for inexpensive kits ($20-$30) to determine whether your granite is "hot."  These kits can be purchased from hardware stores or online as indicated in the article.

This is great information to share with your buyers who are considering purchasing a new home into which they will be adding granite, or resale homes with granite.

As with many other things in this world, I had no idea. If you google "granite countertops radar," you will find a bevy of related articles.

It's hard to imagine even though granite is rock that at the millirem or smaller emission of radiation it is anything to worry about. It's not like they are uranium countertops. It would be nice to know the test for this though.

Gary, exactly my thoughts. Apparently there was some concern brought up last month because some of the granite is considered, "hot."

Hi Teri! You know it's always something! I was just thinking about installing those. I hope now appraisers don't take something off the appraisal if sellers have them. Just kidding!

Teri, thanks for calling my attention to SNOPES. I find that very intersting. That Granite article was interesting as well.

So what will people do with those expensive things!  A home inspector will write them up and the deal goes downnnnn.  Goodness!

Lizette, really! You're absolutely right! BUT, now you're equipped with the information. I've had them for six years, and I'm still okay. It appears that the odds are against heavy doses of radon, but why not get a kid in case. Just take it when you pick out your rock. ;-)

Suzi, you know how you hear rumors online - the ridiculous ones? Well, just check out snopes.com to see if they're true.....now you know. ;-)

Barbara, I think that you'll probably see the home inspectors coming onboard with the tools to test. Guess we're held to a higher standard now, huh?

This just came to my attention this week also!  I wonder if the disclosures will be similar to lead paint :-0

Renee, who knows....??? Or the home inspectors will be purchasing a kit to figure it out. ;-)

Hi Teri I heard about this a few weeks ago from someone else who blogged about it on AR. One would never think a slab of granite could contain enough radon to be harmful.

Bill, I had never heard of this prior to the email I received. It's definitely something about which we, as a Realtor, need to be aware. ;-)

Debbie, you're right about it "is always something."  It's like the medications they give us and then later find out that people die from them....;-) I love my granite countertops as well, and I'm still healthy....cough, cough. ;-)

One scientist advised me, "whatever you do, don't eat the granite." I've taken his advice.

I have never heard this thing before.  I just bought a townhouse few months ago and I ordered granite top for the kitchen.  Do I have to drink more green tea?

Wow! I had no idea that some granite counter tops contain radon.  I am going to do some reading on the topic to see what levels may be present and whether or not it can be a health hazard.

Hey Chuck, good idea. ;-) Sure it wasn't your dentist?

Rosalinda, well, now that you know, you can check out that kit on snopes.com above mentioned. ;-)

Sharon, either did I until I did the research. Now that we know it's of concern, we need to make sure we provide that information to our customers/clients. Good idea to do the research. ;-)
