Some problems are obvious and apparent, while other are elusive. Here is a good example of this.

This Borg-Warner up flow gas furnace has a few problems. This is a 35 year old unit.

The most apparent is the age, second item is the rust in the burner compartment, third item is the flames on the burners are to yellowish and the burners are in need of adjustment.

The forth item is the first burner is cracked, one can see the flame inside the tube. The last item which is easily missing if one does not have the proper tool is the system is producing over 2000 ppm of carbon monoxide at the draft hood.

The house was vacant at the time of the inspection and it what 92 degree outside with high humidity; I was not looking forward to kicking on this rust bucket.

The last two items would have been easily missing to the untrained eye.

The average life expectancy of a furnace is approximately 20 to 25 years.
