Although, Oahu has some famous boogie boarding breaks like Sandy's, Makapu'u, and Pipeline to name few, these breaks can be very dangerous especially to tourists who are unfamiliar with the powerful rip tides and wave action that can pound Oahu's shoreline.

The surf break at the pier at Kuhio Beach Park breaks slightly offshore to the left and right of the pier with a wide based pyramidal wave. Sandy's and Pipeline break on shore with tight barrel waves. What does that mean to the uninitiated? A broken neck, is what can happen with tight barrel waves; often tossing an unskilled surfer on to shore and on to their head.

A wide based wave is easier to ride and catch which can mean less whallowing in the surf and a more enjoyable ride for those who are learning. Makapu'u can have super strong under currents and the waves often move so quickly that fins are required to catch them. Kuhio Beach Park offers an expansive protective reef that slows the speed of the wave so fins are not required to catch the waves as they approach the shoreline; making it easier to catch and ride the waves.
