A few days ago, during the initial days of the recent financial crisis, the business editor of the one and only Green Bay newspaper wrote an article about new businesses in the area. These businesses aren't going to be major employers for the area. They were just small businesses seeking to get a share of the Green Bay consumer dollar.
While the article was designed to mention the new businesses, it's main focus was to make people aware that the business climate in our area is good. We have growth. We have expansion. We lose some jobs but, in turn, more are created.
Many people take all the negative news they hear and try to localize it to the extreme. It's not that we aren't influenced by the ripple effect. It's just that we have such a strong economy here due to tourism and solid local industries. This allows us to weather the "financial storms" a little easier than other parts of the country.
I was extremely pleased to see the article was so positive about our local economy. It's about time. I've been waiting for the media to let a few rays of sunshine into our economic forecast. I know there's still plenty to worry about but worry never will take you to the place that hope does.
Everyone knows the lemons/lemonade analogy. Up here when someone hands you lemons, you cut out a wedge and stick it in your beer!
Take care.
