Third Congregational Church

Middletown, CT

I posted a blog last week about an annual Harvest Dinner being held at the Third Church in Middletown, CT.  It sounded really good, and everything fell into place where I was able to make it.  I'm sure glad I did.  The food was outstanding... and I don't think I was the only one that felt that way.. the church was packed.  I have to admit, I was stuffed, but I went back for seconds on the pork.. just for the taste/flavor.. Hmmm it was so good.

The Partnership for Sharing did a wonderful job. This is comprised of members of the church to form this committee. These people put the whole dinner together.. including serving.

These members were up at the crack of dawn, and started cooking the pork loins at 8am.  Why so early.. they had 170 pounds to cook.. can you imagine?  The homemade mash potatoes had to be made as well.. which was 150 pounds.  One of the members volunteered and made the homemade butternut squash.. which was outstanding in flavor.  How much of this did they make?  Would you believe close to 175 pounds?  Two church members (Ruth and Jenny) made 10 quarts EACH of homemade applesauce to go with the pork.  With all of these expenses and being able to have seconds, one would wonder if they make a profit.. I was told they do... everytime.

Randy (chef), Betty, Betty Ann, Roy, Peggy, Phyllis and all the other workers.  YOU DID A GREAT JOB.

Of course what would a Harvest Dinner be without dessert?  You're right.. a let down.  If you had room, there was a choice of either Homemade apple or pumpkin pie.  Yes, you guessed it.. members of the church made these too.  I was told between the two there were 30 pies.

What do you have with pies, but coffee.. and Dave was going around making sure all cups were full.

This church function was a great success.. and nowhere have I've gone where you are made to feel at home and part of a family.  Thank you for a great time.

George.. I can't wait until next year.  The pork is SOOOO good.  I'm still waiting to hear about the final count.. Not sure if I will get an exact figure, but they always make a profit.  I don't see how they couldn't.

Debi.. I wish you could have been there.. with your family too.  As a matter of fact, I was thinking of you when I was there.  Don't ask, I have no idea why, other than I thought you would enjoy it.

Teresa.. I can still taste the pork..hmmm, it was so good.  I think it also tastes better when someone else cooks it.

You know that is so true. I guess it may be because when you are cooking it yourself you are smelling it all the time, whereas if someone else is cooking it your not...

Teresa.. I never thought of it that way.  You are probably right.  When I was younger (lots) I worked in an ice cream palor.  We were told we could eat what ever we wanted and how ever much we wanted.   What a great job, right?  Well, after 2 weeks I couldn't stand ice cream anymore, and just served it.  So I agree, if you are around it all the time, it deadends your senses.

Tanya.. You should have been there to smell the items cooking.  It has been almost a week, but I can still smell it in my mind.

Valerie, funny that you said you worked in an ice cream parlor. That was my very first job; it was a place called Mayberry's. I only lasted one week. I hated it. It was really hard when you would have a group of people coming in and one would want an ice cream cone, one a sundae, one a banana split, one a fudge cake, and another would want a fudge cake without the ice cream and get all this stuff made so that the group could eat together.

Teresa... I fully understand.  This job at the ice cream palor was only a summer job.  Thank goodness.  For I ran into the same problem you did.. and to get 5 orders all ready at the same time, WITHOUT IT MELTING, was not easy to do.  I'm glad I did it.. but the worst part was that I had to work on the 4th of July... in 1976.  I missed the bicentennial celebrations. That holiday doesn't come around often, and I don't think I will be around for the tricentennial.  LOL.
