The Lee County commission voted 3-1 today to approve an agreement with the Boston Red Sox to build a new spring-training facility for the team in south Lee County. Commissioner Brian Bigelow was the lone dissenting vote. Commissioner Bob Janes was not present for the vote.
Red Sox chief operating officer Mike Dee was present in the chambers for the vote. He will take the agreement back to Boston to meet with team owner John Henry and other team officials. Dee expects to have an answer in a week or so from his bosses on if they want to go ahead with the plan.
“It’s a really meaningful step,” commission chairman Ray Judah said.
The county’s plan calls for a 9,999-seat stadium to resemble Fenway Park, the team’s home in Boston since 1912. The plan calls for berm seating and standing-room only space to boost the capacity to 12,000.
The new stadium will be south of Daniels Parkway and north of Bonita Beach Road and east of U.S. 41.
The agreement has been hammered out by county staff over the past three weeks.
