First Friday and North Bank Artists Gallery

Art and Evil

Early today I glanced at the 'Life' section in The Columbian and just skimmed the article "Women, darkness & the soul". What I read was the little caption about the artist, making silicon molds of her hands. When I walked into the North Bank (one of my favorite galleries) and I recogonized the hands, I realized this was the artist, Kathi Rick.

I had initially walked by the North Bank because the windows were darkened. So as I walked in, it felt a little odd. I noticed the show was partly the slides and images on the wall in the most interior region. As I walked into that room, I saw the hands that had been referenced in the newspaper article. Then on the floor, a life size, nude female form. In what appeared to be a pool of blood. As I stood there, absorbing what I was seeing, I began to understand the words and images that were being projected on the walls. The experience was intense, mesmerizing, and painful.

I left there, headed for the Art on the Boulevard (my very favorite gallery) and tried to shake off the emotions roiling inside. I thought I was okay, but when I said hello to the first familiar person I saw, I became teary and choked up. I was rather emabarassed! It was nice that I was having this little melt down among other people who love art. They understood.

I was in much better spirits by the time I left Art on the Boulevard - and went to The Sixth Street Gallery. Ironically, their show is 'Naked'. More nude female forms (although not exclusively female). A very different experience, but for me, it was entirely filtered through the North Bank art.

I can't bring myself to say 'rush down and see the art at North Bank'. It's upsetting. But, if you're not afraid to think, it's definitely worth visiting. And follow up with the Sixth Street Gallery exhibition. See if you see what I mean about the irony!

Lynn,

I have never tried to understand art.....maybe to my loss, yet I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....and I choose not to behold.

Wow, Lynn! I enjoyed your article about visiting the Art Galleries. I liked that you were up front about the emotional confrontation you felt about the art portrayed.  See you soon!
