I get that question a lot. I've lived and worked in the Atlanta area now for almost 20 years...
Let me give a quick bio for those that don't really know me...
- 1965-1966 - Upstate NY. Doesn't count for much since i was only a year old when I left...
- 1966-1976 - Jackson, MI. Also keep in mind that my grandparents lived in Midland and we had a cottage near Onaway... I spent a lot of summers in MI.
- 1976-1983 - Newport News and Hampton, VA. I made a comeback for a few months in the summer of 1984... and my mother is still there, but I don't get back as much as I should.
- 1983-1989 - St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN. I loved living in the Twin Cities. It was my first exposure to big city life... compared to Hampton, it was huge...
- 1989-Present - Atlanta, GA area...
So, I have lived a few different places... And I have traveled to many more. I have been fortunate to travel to 44 states and half a dozen foreign countries. What can I say, I like road trips.
But why have I settled here in the Atlanta area... and specifically Gwinnett County... Lilburn, even.
It isn't that tough, and the answers are partially expected. First let me tell you that the weather isn't on the chart... I actually miss winter in MN. But it is the location.
- I can be in the mountains in well under two hours.
- I can be at the beach in five hours.
- I can be at a Thrasher's game in 40 minutes.
Of course there are little things, like having 5 grocery stores within 4 miles, as well as all of the services and amenities that I could want within a reasonable distance... my son play ice hockey and that is only 22 minutes away. If you look through my posts on Lilburn, you will see that there are numerous cultural and educational opportunities in the area... and Gwinnett has an excellent school system... and within that school system, the Parkview and Brookwood clusters rank quite well (we are in the Parkview cluster).
I am not going to pick apart the previous places that I have lived. I have enjoyed each of them (except Upstate NY...), but this is my home.
And there is one other thing... if you've ever flown into Atlanta you might have noticed that the metro area is blanketed with trees. Flying into most major metro areas there is not a carpet of trees...
I love to travel. I love seeing other places and experiencing what they have to offer... and I love coming back to Atlanta, and to Lilburn.
