The former lead singer of the 80's new wave group The Talking Heads is coming to Charlotte on Wednesday. He is an ecclectic artist who has trancended the band he made his name with - which was one of the most unique of the 1980s.
David Byrne is playing at Ovens Auditorium, an older venue, that has been a staple of culture in Charlotte for a long time. Actually it has been around since 1955, but you wouldn't notice if you went in. It was built to last and stay classy for a long time. It is a landmark for everyone who makes the commute up Independence Boulevard every morning from Matthews and Indian Trail.
Byrne has become famous for producing world music acts and bringing some forgotten ones to the United States and to the consciousness of music lovers here. His music has clearly been influenced by the people he has worked with as a producer.
Talking Head's fans probably followed this guy, but he is hardly a mainstream artist. One of his songs found its way onto windows xp as a sample song. But, it isn't like he gets airplay on pop stations. Ovens auditorium will be a great venue to see his act. It is cozy and intimate.
