Over $100 Billion dollars are robbed from computer users each year! These are well organized Russian mobsters, radical terrorists and sophisicated gangs that are committing these cyber attacks.computer safety

The Russian company sells fake anti-virus software that actually takes over your computer and pays their affiliates $5 million a year just to distribute this malware. These dollar amounts are conservative put out by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

One of our computers was attacked a while back and I wrote this post about it. This anti-virus software looks just like the Microsoft security logo, down to the colors and all. It took me days to get rid of this culprit.

The first thing to remember is to NEVER pay for this anti-virus. Now they have become so clever that even Microsoft is surprised as this malware is now coming into your computer making it look like you have a Microsoft update. The goal is to steal your money. If you get so frustrated to just pay them their fee to make it go away, don't give into your frustration. The $49.95 is just the hook to get your credit card number and personal info about you so they can get your money and credit.

Brad Andersohn's wife had this bugger attack her computer and it has in just these past few months from the time I was attacked to the time she was attacked been so much more highly developed that Brad was not even able to get AVG downloaded in safe mode. I sent him directions on how to get rid of the virus but they no longer worked. That is how fast these bad guys figure out a way to keep infecting computers.

As soon as the good guys figure out an antidote, the bad guys find out right away and fight back with another attack. They freeze up your computer. They won't let your real anti virus run. It won't let you do a system restore or even turn off your system restore in safemode.

These bad guys have turned this into a very lucrative underground business. Even Macs are no longer safe according to the security companies. Last year in 2007 10% of all the computers were attacked and this year it is increased to 15%. Pandalabs says that over 10 million computers are then being used to spread these viruses and malware over the Internet every day. Microsoft monitored just in the past 6 months a 43% increase in malware being removed from Windows systems.

On November 11th, the amount of spam being sent which is the biggest carrier of the malware dropped by half around the world when an Internet Service provider cut off Mycolo Corp, an American company with Russian ties and shut them down on the Internet. Unfortunately, these successes are not for very long because they just figure out another way.

The criminals are very organized and they are International because there is a lot of money to be made.Stay safe:

  • Protect your business and your private information. Keep your antivirus running at all times.
  •  Turn off your computers at night and when you are not using them.
  • Do not open anything that you do not know who the sender is.
  •  Do not go to sites that are sleezy or criminal type.
  • Use an online back up system, here is a post about the one we use.

Based on our own experience and those we know in the computer industry, choose a top rated anti virus like AVG. We use AVG and it even checks the websites that come up in your searches. They give it a green check mark if the site is safe. Do not visit any sites that do not have the green check mark. But use the paid version of AVG not he Free version. Don't skimp with your protection. Use Firefox for your web browser. Here is a post I wrote about Firefox and why you should use Firefox.

You are so right the bad guys are always working to stay at least one step, maybe two or three steps, ahead of the good guys.  But, we do need to have some good protection for our computers.

Katerina, I know I do not have enough security. I do have AVG and I do use am online back up service BUT I have no other backups for my files. Fortunately most stuff is online now. Google docs, picasa, my data base, the mls even my banking. I do worry though about my laptop going down. I only have the one computer and need to get a second one.

Scary post!!!!

There is no difference in the level of protection between paid and unpaid versions of AVG.

Katerina, Thank you for the warning.  Except for clicking the links (which I never do) I don't do most of the things you mentioned---but am going to start.  I am lost without my computer and the information in it!

Katerina,

It's buzzling to think that the bad guys can stay a step ahead of the good ones who are supposed to be so smart at software development etc. Yet, that's the way it is, unfortunately.

Matt-Making references to them being Russians is not Racial. Race is Black, White, Asian, Jew, Native American, Hispanic. It is not Russian, American, Austrailian, German, Greek, Irish, Middle Eastern, etc.

Our County newspaper is the one that reported about the Russian gangs that are doing this. I am reporting the news. That is not racial stereo typing.

BTW- I also know good Russians and we have a lot of Russians living in our county where this very paper is read and they confer that this is a problem in their country. That is why they are here, not there. Have you ever been to Russia?

But these stats were from the European Security Organization. I am Latvian and my family owns land in Latvia and the Russian mob is trying to steal our land from us and we are in a big court battle over there with them. I have written several posts about these bad guys and I also make it clear that they are the Russian mob. That is not racial, that is just the facts. By my reporting about this I have been able to help other Latvians whose land is being stolen by these mobsters too. Katerina

Eau- There is a difference between the paid and free versions of AVG. I don't get paid to recommend the paid version. You can ask Brad Andersohn about it, he spoke to them and they explained all the differences, One of the main differences is the paid version checks the websites before you go to them and the results are shown on your search results page. Since most of these viruses are coming on to computers through websites as their host this is a feature I would not want to be without. I know, because I have had both the free version and the paid versions.

Esko- I think that is because there is so much money to be paid in these viruses that they will stay up 24/7 working on it. Microsoft does not have the same incentive. Firefox is volunteers who work harder to keep it the safe browser and are always working to keep it safer. Anti virus companies make money this way, if there were no viruses, anti virus co would not be that profitable.

Maria- Thank you.

The Best Spot- The main thing is it can steal your time trying to get rid of it and it can corrupt your computer.

Rebecca- Scary! You are so lucky that your antivirus caught it, most of the time it is getting through antivirus and coming in the back door attached to websites that don't know they have the virus. That is why it is important to use AVG paid version which checks each site before you click on the site in your search results page.

Sabinske- That is smart. Remember now though, they have caught on to smart people like you and now are getting in on the cell phones. Scary stuff. Never click on anything you don't know.

Teri- Turn off your computer all the way at night. That is best for your system health and saves electricity. Always click out of sites when done with them.

Ken- Thanks!

Jason- Thank you- those buggers are a real pain in our time!

Ruthmarie- IE is a snail compared to Firefox. I believe I read on the AVG site that it works on macs but I am not positive. Thanks for sharing. I wish the mls would get with the times here too. MLS only works with IE here too. That is how the bugs get in. Firefox is tons safer and faster.

Elayna- You are welcome and thank you for being here.

People that utilize their free time sending viruses to computers are evil!  Even worse it is so difficult to stop or prevent this from happening, especially when the bad guys are overseas.  Good advice for everyone, people really have to be careful.

A few years ago, I somehow had my credit card information stolen from one of the computers in our home ~ I don't know if it was mine or one of my son's computers.  The last time it was used was when my son ordered movie tickets from Fandango.

Anyway, I get a call from  OfficeMax.com asking if I had recently placed an order -- the call didn't come from my credit card company, rather directly from Office Max!  They received an order on the website that they felt was a bit fishy, as it had my billing information along with my credit card number, but had a Russian shipping address.  They thought it was strange that I would order 5 handheld computers and ship them ro Russia, so they checked it out.  Needless to say, I didnt' order them!

I highly respect Office Max for going out of their way to check it out, and have made a point to shop there ever since (not online, though!).

I am sure the personal information was obtained through one of my son's computers, as I'm almost certain one of them had downloaded one of those "anti virus" pop-ups.  It really messed up his computer at the time, and this was years ago.

online back up is a great idea, I will definitely check up on that.  Personally, I have had problems with firefox.  Our MLS doesn't seem to run properly on it, and I have a Point2 site, and my email from their server apparently doesn't open properly with firefox.  Don't know if others have had that problem.

Carol- You have to use IE for mls and for Point 2- they need to get with it! I only use IE for those 2 things and Firefox for everything else.
