I stumbled upon a news story.
This article, Bush-appointed official twisted species data, report says, is very upsetting. What's upsetting is not just the consequences of a politician appointing unqualified or unscrupulous people to important positions, but the way people responsible for the truth rationalized their own compromise of principles.
My thought is that she only had as much power as the people around her exercised her will. So, just because she's willing to fire someone because they didn't tell her what she wanted to hear, she'd have to have the support of others to actually do anything. If individually we all refuse to to lower our standards, how can others get away with wrong behavior? Am I being too idealistic?
I can think of situations where I've signed papers that I didn't agree with just so I could accomplish another activity - so I guess I understand what happens. We make small compromises with our better judgement, little bits at a time, and then the next thing you know, our behaviors are out of line with our values.
Well, just as small actions can move us away from the ideal, small actions can move us toward the ideal. I can't do much for the spotted owl directly, but I can promise to be vigilant that when I buy products, the dollars I spend aren't supporting the companies that benefit from the wrong-doing of others.
Is this about ecology, politics, or philosophy? I guess it's all that and maybe more. What do you think of your role in 'doing the right thing'?
