Sometimes we just need a reminder

Let’s see…

* Madoff swindled $50 billion from innocent people and charities

* A financial advisor faked his death in a plane crash

* CEO’s receiving bailout money were asking for large bonuses for themselves

* Citicorp is teetering on the edge

* Mass layoff’s are continuing

on and on and on and on...

Sometimes you just can’t open the newspaper or your Google reader without wondering what unethical and selfish act you will read about next. Oh…let’s see another banker just screwed someone out of their retirement…oh you help feed the homeless? let me take your money…how nice…

Humanity sometimes feels like it’s on a course for oblivion.

Then…something good happens…

Unless you haven’t surfaced for a couple of days you can’t have missed the plane landing in the Hudson river. Everyone on board survived and ferry boats headed to the crash site before first responders could get there. Everyday citizens just out and about headed over to help.

Sometimes just when I think I can’t read any more about selfish and greedy people, I get that reminder that there are many good people in the world. People who care about others and step up to the plate when they see the need. So…to Sully (the pilot) for keeping those who trusted you safe…to the captains of the boats that headed over to help right away…and to the people on the plane that helped each other get off…thank you for reminding us that we have many great people among us.

Sometimes we just need a reminder.

Lisa and Mary-I agree. I think our nation desperately needs some good news and to restore our faith in each other.

The only thing better would have been if he made his original destination without problem.  But for what could have been a big tragedy, it certainly had a happy ending indeed.

Melina,

Did you notice Richard's comment. Just think about it: if the plane had reached its destination without a problem, who would ever hear the name of the pilot, who is heralded as a hero?

This is an interesting tought.

Richard and Jon I agree.  We forget about people in our day to day lives.  People who put out fires, land planes, care for the elderly all without daily recognition.  We have many great people that live their lives everyday.

The reason, I think, for the press around this story is that we are needing to be reminded that good things happen amongst the chaos.  Life for many people these days, is filled with stress.  I take comfort in knowing that even when something bad happens, it can still end on a good note when people work together.

I agree, Melina.  The problem is that bad news sells... what's the saying, if it bleeds, it leads?  It's nice to have a break from the daily deluge of depressing news.

I've about given up on reading the newspaper and the negativity that it exudes!  My own "little" world is much more positive.  We've got to keep believing that these well advertised selfish/deceptive people are not the normal -- just well advertised!  Keep on accentuating the positive!

The story about the plane crash and how people both on and off the plane reacted shows that there are lots of great folks in the country.

Human nature is really consistently good, there are so many heartwarming stories out there and the Hudson River plane crash just reminded us! Thankfully, that pilot was experienced and knew what to do!

Jesse-bad news sells, but so does really great news!  Sully has many fans on facebook (myself included).

Mike-You're welcome.

Margaret-I have days that I don't read the news. I can only handle so much toxicity.

Scott, Charles and Caren-human nature is essentially good. We are.  It just gets overshadowed will all this other junk.

Melina, great positive post. The lump in the throat type of behavior is what that airplane miracle brought to me. Seriously. How wonderful....humans, by and large, are good people. It's the few that make it seem not so. ;-)

Teri-I had the same reaction, and then I felt a sense of relief.  I was just so glad to see something good make the news, which is why I then wrote the post.

Sometimes we need a disaster to help us come together. Perhaps this economic disaster will help red and blue states come together to get America moving again.

We've seen that an unfettered free market economy doesn't work, resulting in enormous greed by the power players. Some regulation is necessary. I think Obama understands that, whereas Bush apparently did not.

This was very good news indeed.  Melina, I have found in life that you really have to go look for good stuff, even if it's the little things.  I miss a lot of the good news because I don't listen to the news at all.  I did catch President Elect Obama's last few minutes of a speech today and it is very hopeful.  Life will be good.  I can feel it.  xxoo

Melina - There are a lot of good people in this world...  It's upsetting to see what greed and entitlement has done to many people, when most hard working Americans never dream of anything more than seeing their children grow up to be health and happy.  I love your post...  Keep the faith.

Melina - Perhaps more than any other time in the past few decades, we need to come together as a country and commit to looking out for each other.  The plane crash is proof that most people have an undelying sense of decency and a desire to help someone in trouble.  If these traits can be harnessed properly, this depression will end and we will be a better and stronger nation.

I'm not a big fan of the word "hero" because this generation doesn't know who or what a hero is, believing that sports stars and movie stars are heroes. Nope. They are idols.

Occasionally, however, a real hero does pop out of the ocean (pun intended) and, amazingly, the media doesn't turn it into something negative.

It was amazing and beautiful to watch, especially since we now know that we weren't watching anyone get seriously injured or die, and that we were, indeed, watching the results of the actions of a hero.

I read about this story too, and it seems that it is just that much sweeter because of all the crap we read about otherwise!  Yeah, there are still good people in the world!
