Unsolicited text messages on your cell phone?

By

Anyone being affected by unsolicited text messages on the cell phone?

How do we get rid of them? These cost $.10 each. Does it really stop if I reply to the message and send the word "stop" or is this just a gimmick to spam me even more? When I call the phone number on the message, it's usually some business that signed up for some marketing scheme. They're getting more frustrated calls than people who are actually interested in using their services. Is there any law similar to the "Do Not Call" law to get rid of these annoying messages?

Any advice?

I thought that they couldn't solicit to cell phones?  Though now that I think about it I seem to remember something about them making it legal now.  Anyone know tha facts?

You need to register your cell phone number on the Do Not Call list. This February, our government decided to allow cell phones to be used for telemarketing. And they published a directory also.

Oh! I just remembered. If you have your cell phone number on your web site, you need to remove it. Apparently, that makes it exempt from the Do Not Call list.

I used to get alot of them a few years ago, but I haven't gotten one in a long time.  I don't know if there was a change in the law or not, but I did add my cell # to the "do not call" list.  Not sure if that helped, but if you haven't done added yours to the list, it might be worth a try.

If the text is from a number you do not recognize you should be able to delete it without accepting charges (opening it).  If not, I would suggest calling your cell provider and having them put a stop to it for you!  Good luck!

Hey Aaron, we are in the same office, wow!  I haven't met you yet, I usually come in really early in the mornings, when I'am able, which is not vry often.  At any rate, you should check out my blog about this very topic.  It's very informative!

I had this problem, and I had friends who kept texting me, just for kicks.  So, I blocked all text messages.  The only problem now is if I take a photo from my camera, I can't send it; and my company can not text me messages w/phone # from directory assistance.  But, I have just learned to live with this - it cheaper than paying for all of those calls.

Not only do you want to register your cell phone on www.donotcall.gov, but after that, when you get any calls (albeit a text or a solicitation call), go back to www.donotcall.gov and register a complaint by entering the phone number of the originator. My cell phone number got put on a solicitation list for penny stocks by a disgruntled former employee and I had hundreds of solicitation calls daily- but I can't change my number as it is well known. Donotcall.gov stepped up for me after tons of complaints and now I may get 1 a week. Also, Verizon Wireless refunded over $100 to me on two occasions to help the burden. Can you hear me now?
