Learned a New Lesson the HARD WAY!

Thanks to everyone who commented on my blog from Tuesday. I have learned that you can make a back up of a web site, just in case.

Now, I need to find out from other AR's what software or web site do you use to back up your entire computer and your web site???

I used the Windows Backup program one time and ended up needing to restore from it and there was a problem and I could only do a partial restore.

I have seen ads for services that allow you to back up through a web site which sounds like a good idea, but what if the company that I choose to back ups goes out of business?

If I do a hard media back up onto DVD's then I would have to be sure to DO IT and take the back up off-site in case of fire, flood or locus.

So, back to my question:

What do you do for Backing Up your Computer and Web Site???

Thanks

Hmmm. I'm trying to get a handle on all of my technology right now.  I have an external hard drive that I do back up on for right now.  Let me know what you find out and keep us posted.

Back ups huh?

My tech guy added a uber back up system to my computer connection.  Backed everything up at 5:00 a.m. daily.

Then my system crashed when a uber virus got through my uber virus protection system.

The uber back up system was also wiped out.  As was the uber firewall.

I was on my back up off the shelf Sony computer for a week while my primary custom system was being wiped clean and repopulated with all of my programs, except the ones that he forgot.

We're doomed.

Randy, a backup onto an external hard drive saved me the other day. I use a backup program called Acronis Home. Worked well and saved my system and a lot of heart ache. I can feel for Lenn. I thought I was in the same boat has her.

For my website, my website host has a backup provision for saving. I save it as a separate file on my external hard drive.

I say this a lot but its all about redundency. Just putting stuff on a external will not save you. Raid wont save you. And hard media wont save you. You need to do them all. Look into cloud storage maybe as well. If its crucial data and you have a lot of money look into a hardened data center.

As far as your website my host costs 4.99/month and provides a free backup tool. I did a backup while I wrote my response to your last post. Its quick and easy and costs nothing. These are 2 very different things and you need to think about your data and where you store it

Heres a list:

# of backups = The more the better

Location of backups = physical + cloud + etc etc as many places as you can

Quality of backups = Make sure your backups work!

Timing of backups = As often and as regularly as you can. Its up to you to do them.

Automation = If you can automate this process go for it but you are ultimately responsible. No matter how much a system costs it cant replace you and nothing is perfect thats why you have to do all of these things or risk failure. Even if you make 1025309862 copies if its the same bad copy you are out of luck. If you store it in a bad place and you cant recover it you are out of luck. etc etc.
