We all have heard about Twitter's usefulness in building local relationships for business, but what about for blogging?

The other day, I was driving through a neighborhood near my house (Village In The Woods, between Mainland Rd. and Guilbeau Rd.) and I noticed something strange.  There on the corner of Olde Village and Mainland road sat a bunch of construction vehicles, a camera crew, and Councilman Justin Rodriguez.  Of course, I passed by it kind of quickly, so I wasn't 100% sure I had just seen the District 7 Councilman, but I was pretty sure it was him.  I also heard him speaking over a loudspeaker, so I assumed he was giving some sort of important speech about something in the area (and perhaps explaining all the construction vehicles).  When I got home, I hit up Google for the information I needed.  I couldn't find anything.  So I turned to Twitter and one of my favorite follows - @ksatnews.  I've been following them for awhile now and have tweeted back and forth a few times when I was looking for an update on a news story.

Following your local news?

KSAT 12 News here in San Antonio is my preferred news channel, so you can imagine I jumped at the chance to follow them when I found them on Twitter.  By following them, I've been able to learn about news stories before they hit the airwaves and ask questions when I needed some more info.  Not every town is going to have their local news on Twitter, but if your community does, you should be listening.  Imagine being about to get the scoop on something happening that could affect real estate in your area.  Or just an idea for a great post.  Or an interesting bit for  a piece in Localism.  Whatever it is, you'll find yourself more informed and ready to answer questions or write new blogs of community interest.

KSAT not only gave me the info I needed, but provided some extra.

I asked @ksatnews if they would be running a piece about what I had seen and they did confirm that it would be on the 5 o'clock news.  A few minutes later, I got a tweet that the story had been pushed off the 5 o'clock news, but they wanted to send me the press release since I wouldn't be able to see it on the news.  I now know exactly what all the commotion was in my neighborhood and will be blogging about it shortly.  it pays to know someone in the local news department - even if you don't have access to them on Twitter, maybe you should get a relationship started.  You never know when you'll need the scoop for a great blog post.

Special thanks to @ksatnews for being forward-thinking enough to get involved in Twitter.  You were already my news of choice, but your involvement in social media only makes me like you more.

Matt,

Wow, cool story.  I've got a TWITTER account, but don't even really know what to do with it.  This has motivated me to log back in and figure it out!

Thanks.

That is great!  I hadn't thought about following the news on twitter before. I'll think about looking into that.  Not sure I want a tweet every time there's something little going on in the area...

I'm working on a blog post from information I got from @fox5newsedge. I was watching a news piece the other night about Gov O'Malley (MD Gov) and how the stimulous money was going to be spent. Well, they showed some stats on road infrastucture and how much each County was going to get, but it was gone as quick as they put it up.

I looked on their website and couldn't find a link... so I sent them a tweet and almost immediately they acknowledged my tweet and within a couple of minutes I had the info I need. Interestingly it came from one of their technicians named Matt aka @boobtubious. Haha

Ben - I had used Twitter at first to netowrk with other agents, then locals, and now use it for research on blog posts utilizing some of the best and brightest in town.  Its been great for me.  Thanks to Twitter I was interviewed on BlogTalkRadio by Tech In Twenty and wrote this post about San Antonio's "Mission Verde."  More will definitely follow.

Donna - It really depends on how your local news handles it.  @ksatnews handles it pretty well.  I don't get flooded with tons of useless garbage, but they do update me on things.  Plus, they are very interactive - talking back and forth with people...its not just a one way street.  I think other news channels could learn a thing or two from them.

Craig - That's the best part, when you miss the news or they don't cover it in depth...you can go to the source.  So far I've found them to be very willing to help (I even got a thank you note for them when I showed them the post and they said they were going to use it to show their media department how Twitter can be very effective for them).

Robert - I got lucky to get involved pretty early and was introduced to so many people right away.  It definitely helped me grow into being an agent as well.

Missy - I think Amber Salmon's recent post is a great example of a way to use Twitter to get those quick answers that turn into blogging or connection gold.  Not that I need to tell you.

Li - I think everyone has the same first reaction to Twitter.  It doesn't seem very useful at all at first, but as you grow your network of followers (that are quality over quantity) you will find yourself making all sorts of connections that not only mean good business, but also great relationships.

Brother Richard - I imagine you can dream up some great stuff, especially if you combine it with Twitpic and your awesome photo skills.

Bruce and Sandy - Let me know how your local news works out for you.  If they're bad at it, tell them to follow @ksatnews for the right way to do it.

Janie - Just watched it, that's great.  I think we all need to be open to the fact that although we know we're watching and following and reading, so are other people - you never know who might discover you.

Kristin - By the time I get it posted it will be over...haha.  That's one problem with blogging about events - if you don't get them done right away, you're too late!

Jeanna - Nice to see you here as well.  Hope you get something of use from @ksatnews.
