As I write this post, I am sitting in the beautiful gymnasium at the Brecksville Rec Center (officially known as the Brecksville Community Center.) It is a Saturday afternoon and my almost 8-year old son is a big basketball guy. He has played basketball in various camps and sessions around the area over the last few years, including the Brecksville league which starts in 2 weeks. There are at least 5-6 different sets of people shooting hoops—from a group of 7-8 year olds (my son included) to older adults, with groups of middle and high school boys thrown in.
It is a full gym and everyone is having a great time. The really cool thing is that everyone knows their space and plays well with others! I haven’t heard any bad language nor seen any impolite behavior. It reminds me of when I watch my daughter ride in an arena with 8-10 other people riding their horses and they all seem to know where to go and how to stay out of each other’s way.
What a place—the indoor track circles the gym from above, so if you are running or walking, you definitely have something to watch and, if you are feeling sluggish, you definitely have inspiration! There are six basketball nets, two sets of bleachers and a stage in the gymnasium. The floors are in great shape and everything is clean.
The other thing I really like about the rec is that everyone just throws their stuff down and doesn’t worry about it—there are cell phones, clothing, money, backpacks, shoes, you name it, laying around on the bleachers and no one gives it a second thought. It can become intense, however, when you are sitting on the bleachers, writing a post for Localism, for example, and the basketball is coming straight at you because one of the guys just made a really good play at the net and deflected the ball.
Just a typical cold, winter Saturday in Brecksville…I am grateful for this beautiful recreation center, much of which I have not even described considering there is a huge indoor pool, an outdoor pool, a community room that can be rented for parties (the Echo Hills neighborhood has their annual Christmas party in the room), a large workout/exercise area, as well as a daycare room for the smaller kids. I can tell you that in this age of technology, I would rather be looking for a plug to use for my laptop in a gymnasium while my son is playing basketball, then sitting at home while he is watching TV or playing a game on his PS2. Having the ability to go to a super place, meet your friends, and shoot hoops just plain rocks!!
P.S. I’m not a couch potato – I shoot hoops with him and have a blast if he hasn’t found any kids to play with.
