Special offer

Red Sox, Yankees, and Johnny Damon

Hi everyone.  Just discovered and joined this group today.  I can sense the excitement in the air as spring training revs up.

Anyway, I'd like to share a story with you.  Being Massachusetts residents, my family and I have naturally become fans of the Red Sox.  When Johnny Damon moved to the Yankees, my son (then 9 years old) was quite upset to see his hero leave town.

"Why did Johnny Damon go with the Yankees, Dad?"

"Well, the Yankees offered him more money than the Red Sox were paying, so Johnny decided to take the offer and went to play for the Yankees."

My son sniffed a little, stuck his chin out, folded his arms across his chest and retorted, "You mean - the New York BANKees."

My son's first lesson in sports loyalty.  He became furiously supportive of the players who stayed with the Red Sox that year!

Have a great day, all.

Kathryn. Your son was overly kind in his assessment of that move and moves back to Babe Ruth that have sparked this long standing rivalry. My friends..who are Sox fans..have harsher things to say about Johnny & Manny as well. Go Sox!!

Steve and NCF - It has been um, disappointing, to see those two guys walk out.  My mom, a New Yorker, is a Yankees fan.  However, when she crosses state borders, she puts on the Red Sox hat that I gave her.  We'll convert her yet.

I will start by saying I am not a Sox fan. Being a Baseball Nut I have been to Fenway and loved it. I am a Mets nut and am thankful for Bob Stanley and Bill Buckner. I can't blame some of the guys for leaving their teams for more money, who wouldn't leave for loads more cash. The good news is The Sox got the best years out of Damon and Manny.

David - the Mets are a great team.  I think Manny still has some good years ahead but you are right - we did get some very good years from him.
