Get Involved. What Would You Like to Learn to Do? Suggestions Welcomed

I am chairing a charity auction this fall to raise money for cystic fibrosis research because my daughter has cystic fibrosis and I am trying to raise as much money as possible for a very worthy cause.  Having said that, I should also add that fund raising is not easy these days with the down turn in the economy. Auctions don't raise as much money as they did last year, and  I don't think that people donate "stuff" as easily either.  (Which is probably a good thing because how much more stuff do any of us need?)

My thought about the auction is that we need to offer different items than those offered in the past - not more stuff - but opportunities that money can't buy. For instance - one client said he would really like to learn how to make cocktail drinks - so maybe I can get a professional bartender to donate an evening of service to teach a group of friends how to make all those popular new drinks and they could make a party out of it. Or - another client said he wants to learn to make sushi. If I can find a sushi chef willing to donate an evening - another instant party for a group of friends.

Another approach is to identify unusual things that money can't buy - such as a walk on at the Washington opera as a supernumerary (don't you love the word?) or to throw out a pitch at a professional baseball game? I already got a great suggestion from an ActiveRainer about a hot air balloon ride, so thanks a lot for that!

Any ideas of things you want to learn? or unique experiences that you want to share? I really want this to be a great event and I need help so I am counting on your thoughts. Thanks in advance - there is not a more creative group anywhere than ActiveRainers!

I am not sure if this is a family event, cause this wouldn't work in that situation. I was going to suggest auctioning dates with well known people in your area then I scrolled back up and saw DC. Well any way they do this for different fund raising programs here and it brings in the money.

Lisa, our board of realtors did an auction like that, a great success. I know some of the prizes included a weekend at a realtors house in RI on the beach, with a gourmet dinner, piano lessons, many of our board members gladly donated their time and talent as prizes at the auction.

Something else I just saw today, which is not for the auction, but may be a way for you to collect money far longer, is with a search engine who donates to charities every time someone uses it. I did see the cystic fibrosis fund is listed, but perhaps you can get more people to use the search engine. Here is their link: http://www.goodsearch.com/

Best of luck to you, and to your daughter. I hope your fundraiser is a great success.

What a terrific idea and so unique.  I'm sure you are going to raise a lot of money. I''m trying to think of something but drawing a blank.

Hmmmm, how about doing an Active Rain Silent Auction.  Maybe Rainers will donate their online talents and help you.  I'll see what else I can think of.

Hi Lise. I think your are doing great on your own! Congratualtions on thinking "outside the box" and finding new directions for your very worthwhile funding events.

I love your ideas so far! I attend many auctions during the year and the more unusual items seem to raise the most money. Some items I've recently seen include:

1. Crew on a powerboat or sailboat for the day

2. Weekend/week at someone's vacation home

3. A round of golf with a local celebrity

4. A day at a fire station

5. Cooking classes/dance lessons/etc.

6. A few hours at a local radio or tv station

Good luck with your event!

Lise,

Way to go.

Not sure you need any help.

Recent charity, we charged $5 for photo with local celebrity (most are willing to donate time)  It was huge success.  We did this at local school ball tournament.  It was great fun.

You have no idea how much you just helped me.  I do fund raisers as well and these are terrific ideas.  Thank you!

Sushi chefs are usually very kind people and I am certain you will find one to help.

Lise - how about a golf lesson, or round of golf for 4 at a great local course? A ride to and from work for a week? Keep us posted please.
