Rowing TeamReal Estate - The New Team Sport

I haven't always been part of a real estate team, when I first started in real estate, I was on my own for a few months while Kevin was taking his licensing classes. Then when he first got licensed, we both tried to do everything. It became evident pretty quickly that we each had different strengths and we enjoyed different aspects of the business.

Once we realized and accepted that fact, we could each focus on the areas we are best at and that we could be twice as productive and serve our clients better.

No one person can be good at everything, with a team, you don't have to be.

We see all kinds of teams in our area - father/daughter, mother/son, husband/wife, or just two agents that work well together and decide to work as a team. Many of the teams in our area are among the top producers, and for good reason. There are many benefits to working as part of a team.

What are the benefits of a working as a team?Time

  • Double the Time - As a Realtor®, you often wish there were 48 hours in a day. There are with a team.
  • Better service for your clients - if one of us is unavailable, the other one can usually answer the phone or meet with a client. We even provide the other person's cell phone number on our voice mail so a caller has options if they need immediate assistance.
  • Connect with a broader range of clients - if a client doesn't connect with one of us, the other one can step in and is usually able to make a connection. This allows us to get and keep more clients.
  • Spend More Time on Tasks You Enjoy, and Less Time on Those You Don't - This has been our greatest benefit, we have assigned our tasks based on our strengths and likes. This makes our job more enjoyable and allows us to get more accomplished in less time.
  • Share ideas and Solutions - when you have a question or a challenging situation, it's great to have someone to share ideas and brainstorm possible solutions.
  • Different Perspectives - when you are coming up with new marketing ideas or struggling with a client issue, a different perspective and knowledge and experience base can help you come up with new solutions.

two heads are better than oneSo if you're looking for a way to achieve more, and you can work well with others, consider becoming part of a real estate team. In real estate, two heads really can be better than one!

Good intro post.  Teams can work better if the chemistry is there.  "A double braided cord" philosophy.   However, if they're not, then forget it.

In the way that our corporate/broker world defines "team" we are not...but we know what we do and who does what...and that is what works. I always say that David will help with the inspection end...recommend the plumber, handyman, etc. and I do the really important things like decide what color to paint the kitchen...how to stage the master bedroom and the right color soap in the guest bath !

Hi Sally & David - It is a matter of assigning tasks to who is best suited for the job, and it's great to be able to have all that expertise, from home staging to selecting a plumber :)

Very nice list of benefits. My husband, Wayne and I are a team and while it was a challenge to work together in the beginning (who's the boss) it is working well after 5 years.  I was really impressed of your list of benefits -- since we are non-competing can I use that list for my web site?  Also, I noticed that you a member of facebook, etc -- we have recently joined in all of these sites, how do you keep up with all of them -- that is our challenge.

I agree, using the team approach is a great way for agents to accomplish much. Thanks for the tips. I'll definitely keep them in mind. I actually need to do the team approach myself...

Hi Jo-Ann - that's great, it does take a bit to iron out who does what. Feel free to use our post with a link back to us.

Hi Williams - thank you! Let us know how it goes. :)

I like the idea of a team, I currently am not in a team, but have several people that I mastermind with. I am waiting for my daughter to get her license, and then we will be a team!

Hi Sharon - that's exciting, we hope our daughter will consider real estate as well when she gets a bit older. I hope she enjoys it also :)

Amen to that! I am so fortunate to have an awesome team. My favorite benefit: jamming on new ideas. Matt and Kareem have such a different background than I do. We have such a cool open 'think tank' enviroment. We're always throwing ideas out with no fear about being stupid... To me that's just so darn fun! And as I use to tell my kids when they were young. "It's a lot more fun, when you're havin' fun."

Great post... thx...

Rene'

Lee's office is right next to mine and I keep telling him we need to have a sliding window cut into the wall so I can keep an eye on him and yell over what I want him to do. Just kidding - of course we really love working together as a team and we definitely have areas that are best suited for each of us. I'm really not that suited to showing land, especially large tracts, but Lee, and I think men in general, are good with a survey, compass, and the vision in cutting in roads to develop property, much better than myself. Our favorite line to say to eachother is "as team member, I choose you to do..."
