Today it was announed on the news that Connecticut will be ushering in two new area codes and 10-digit dialing for all calls even it it's across the street.

Coming To Connecticut - New Area Codes 475 and 959The State Department of State Utility Control said the switch to 10-digit dialing is necessary in advance of the state's need for new area codes.

Area code 203 is expected to run out of numbers by the middle of 2010 at which time new numbers will go into the area code 475.  The 860 area code is expected to run out a year later in 2011 and new numbers will go into the area code 959.

Starting on April 1, callers in the state will have the option of using either the 7 or 10 digits when dialing local calls.  It will become mandatory on December 1 to use the area code for all calls. Callers will still need to dial 1 when making toll calls only. No calling areas, charges or rates are affected by the change.

Hi Donna,

I hated when this happened in Massachusetts but I guess I'm used to it now.  For cripes sake when I was little we only dialed four numbers - and I'm not that old!  Between passwords, multiple phone numbers for people, etc. my mind has maxed out on numbers and can't add any more to the memory mix.

Donna, Thank you for the heads up.  I haven't seen anything about it in the Connecticut Post (no surprise there).  I'll have to reprogram my cell phone with the area code 203.  Now I'll have something productive to do while I wait in line from now until December!

Donna, OH joy, OH joy, just what I was looking forward to dialing more number, and it would be just my luck that my area would get one of the new area codes.  Better start preparing myself for it now.

Liz - I can't even begin to imagine how confusing this might get to be for some people..  It will interesting to see how it goes once it goes into effect.

Gail - I didn't see it in the newspaper either...I happened to hear it over the radio yesterday morning.  My cell phone has some 10 digit numbers already in it and some that are not...I'll be doing the same thing as you are too soon...The other thing is also adding the 1 for any toll calls that we'll be making with the state.

George - Well you've got a little more time than I do...your new aread code won't be added til 2011...mine is a year from now....I'm going to have to learn how to have everyone set up on a spped dial to eliminate all these extra digits.

Donna - Love the photos !  Additional zip codes is a good sign for growth.  Is amazing how area are running out of area codes.  The country is probably running out of soc sec numbers and so forth !

Christopher & Stephanie - I thought the photo would convey how a lot of people will be feeling given all the changes we're going to be seeing real soon. :) They've been talking about this in Connecticut for quite awhile...it was just a matter of time before it would become a reality.
