law enforcement: "What the....." Wednesday - 09/12/12 11:47 AM
"What the.....?" Wednesday

"What the.....?" Wednesday
Now, the question here isn't "Why did the lady push her kid out in the middle of traffic- when a crosswalk wasn't far away?" No, the answer to that one is easy: "Because she could, and she had no regard for the law."
No, the question here is "Did this ignorant lady and her poor kid make it to the other side?"
As far as I know, she made it. But stay tuned- and see if she makes my popular Pedestrian Tales Fom the Middle of the Road...

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #30
Today's news brings the 30th death of this sort to light since I started documenting these, and it's another sad one indeed. An older gentleman dies- but a young lady only 20 years old must deal with having run him over as he walked in front of her for the rest of her life.
This comes under the not-so-watchful eyes of Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney and Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings. Demings is up for re-election this year and is expected to cruise to victory in a landslide. I … (0 comments)

Yet another avoidable Central Florida death.  This one occurred under the watch of Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker. May God bless Daignault's family and the pedestrian's family.
Troopers: Pedestrian hit, killed in Brevard County
Florida Highway Patrool troopers said a pedestrian was hit and killed in Brevard County Saturday night. The crash happened shortly before 9:00 a.m. on State Road 3 at Spruce Avenue, in Merritt Island.
A Toyota Scion, driven by Colette Daignault, struck the pedestrian, according to troopers. FHP said the pedestrian, whose identity has not … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #28
Wow.  This isn't the first of these apparent "suicide by automobile" incidents, and I'm sure it won't be the last.  My brother-in-law actually witnessed one of these a few years ago:  a lady stood on the shoulder smoking a cigarette, and she stepped in the path of a tractor-trailor when there was no chance of it slowing down.  When he stopped to try and render aid, the cigarette was still smoking.
It's surely a tragedy- and one where I have to say that the victims are the driver of the tractor-trailor … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #27

Here's another installment from my popular series documenting some of our Orlando area's most preventable of tragedies.  This one falls under the jurisdiction of Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.  As frequent visitors know, I believe pedestrians should be on sidewalks and in crosswalks.  I know- funny concept.  That said, I've come to have less and less sympathy for those walking into traffic- and more and more for those motorists who try to avoid the "froggers" to no avail.  Indeed, it is them that I've come to consider the true victims … (0 comments)

Volusia County man killed in pedestrian crash
Well, here we have yet another death occurring under the less-than-watchful eyes of Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson and Deland Police Chief Bill Ridgeway. As with all of these 26 cases thus far, it wouldn't have happened if the pedestrian had remained on the sidewalk or crossed the street when and where legally entitled to do so.
May God bless the family of this victim- and may God bless and comfort Linda Williams and her family in the days, … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #24
Just ahead of our Independence Day getaways, yet another senseless and preventable death in Orlando. Of note- as I write this, a news update report has just spoken of a roadway here being shut down. It's in an area that may very well have seen Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #25 before I've finished speaking of #24...
This article here is fairly informative, but has left out a couple of things about the story. First, … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #22
Nearly made it a month. Unless I've missed some, we nearly made it a month without a pedestrian death around here. I'd love to feel our roads and sidewalks are that much safer- but I fear I've simply missed some. Oh, well. As they say, all good things must come to an end.
I've included 2 stories here, as they provide slightly different information. Here's the most important thing to take away from here, though- and perhaps the best example I've written of yet in describing how Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney and Orange … (4 comments)

Pedestrian tales from the middle of the road, #10
Today, we hear of another tragic accident that's occurred under the watch of Osceola County (FL) Sheriff Bob Hansell.
Simply put, too many folks are dying on our roadways, and maybe THIS will be the death that sees this problem addressed in some kind of meaningful and constructive manner.
May God bless and keep all 3 families affected by this sad, yet preventable event.

It's your turn again, Seminole County Sheriff Donald Eslinger...Another of our neghbors has found little use for the City of Sanford or Seminole County's pedestrian traffic laws. He's now gone- but his family, the truck driver and his family will absorb the price of his actions for a long time to come.
May God bless, keep and comfort all families involved.. May God also allow us a great start to 2012- and lead our local law enforcement agencies to protect and serve our community as they've sworn to do- even when that means protecting … (0 comments)

Another pedestrian tragedy on the roads here. Brevard County Sheriff J.R. "Jack" Parker joins Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and other law enforcement heads around here who need to do a much better job of enforcing our pedestrian traffic laws.
One accident here, but two families affected- and both surely had a Christmas 2011 they'd like to forget.
May God bless both Mr. Taylor's family and the pedestrian's- for this accident claimed quite a few victims.

7 isn't a luck number around here... and this is pedestrian death #2 in the last day and #3 this week.
This is another death coming out of Osceola County- and one that falls under the watch of Osceola County Sheriff Bob Hansell.
Let's start enforcing our pedestrian traffic laws, Central Florida.  Fewer pedestrians walking into the paths of vehicles means fewer dead pedestrians.
May God bless both families here as our holiday weekend approaches- both the family of the man whose life came to a tragic end, as well as Mr. Jagers and … (2 comments)

Another day, another death here in Central Florida..... Here's to you, Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson.  You've now joined Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Osceola County Sheriff Bob Hansell in having a recent unnecessary pedestrian death on your watch.
May God bless and keep the family of young Shinnique Comer as they deal with her loss this holiday weekend- and may God bless and young Shivon Walker and her family as they cope with the tragedy as well.

Pedestrian tales from the middle of the road, #4 and #5Well, it's a double today, ladies and gentlemen...As Christmas time approaches, we have one lady in critical condition for absolutely venturing into the roadway where she shouldn't be walking- and we have yet another fatality that is almost assuredly attributable to the pedestrian stepping out where he didn't belong. In the latter case, one family will mourn the loss of their loved one this coming Christmas morn- while another family must comfort and tend to the needs of an 18-year-old young man who will surely grapple with yesterday's events for many, many … (4 comments)

Pedestrian tales from the middle of the road, #2Another day, another dead pedestrian in the middle of the road where they shouldn't have been... As I stated in "Pedestrian tales...#1" just a few days ago, enforcement of our pedestrian traffic laws is simply not a big priority around here- and judging from the number of folks that wander out or race out in the street in front of me every day, that's just fine. I'd bet that would change if you were, say, a family member of the elderly man in the today's story.I'd bet his family wishes he hadn't been … (0 comments)

Pedestrian tales from the middle of the road, #1
Another day, another dead pedestrian in the middle of the road where they shouldn't have been...
In the past, I've written letters to our liberal local newspaper, the Orlando Sentinel. I've called numerous times and had lengthy conversations with at least 3 columnists there regarding the deadly serious issue of jaywalking here in Orlando- and my comments have continuously fallen upon deaf ears. I've spoken on a number of different occasions, I've spoken with members of the Orlando Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.
A lot of folks … (9 comments)
