Are you settling for mediocrity?

Are you settling for mediocrity?
A couple of questions that have been bouncin' around between my ears for a day or two now: "Am I settling for mediocrity?" and "If so, how can I keep from doing so?"
Those are tougher to answer than you might think- for it requires one to be very honest with themselves. I'm the only one who truly knows if I'm trying as hard as I can, and you're the only one who knows if you're trying as hard as you possibly can.
If we're trying … (12 comments)

ORRA Congressional Meet & Greet August 6th

http://www.orlrealtor.com/events/event_details.asp?id=238887

From 5:30-7:30 this coming Monday evening, August 6th, our Orlando Regional Realtor Association (ORRA) will join with the Central Florida Veterans, Inc. in hosting a reception for candidates seeking election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida's 5th,7th,8th,9th and 10th congressional districts.

In all, 18 candidates are scheduled to attend- but I'd figure the most interesting parts of the evening will come from the District 7 folks.  Re-districting has forced two incumbent Republicans into battle against one another:  10-term District 7 incumbent Congressman John Mica (powerful Chairman of … (2 comments)

800 LinkedIn connections...Now, where's the business?

"Your LinkedIn Network 800 Connections link you to 5,157,473+ professionals
15,074 New people in your Network since August 1"

That's it!  800 LinkedIn connections!...wait a second- where's all of that business that's supposed to flow from that like a fountain?  I must be doing something wrong, 'cause that's not the way life's going these days.  Trickle?  Check.  Drip?  Ditto.  Small streaming line?  Perhaps- but no dang fountain in sight!

Thanks to Jennifer Murphy from University of Phoenix, who became that magical #800 today.  It's not her fault my business is slow … (2 comments)

Shaking things up...new profile photo

Those of you who have followed this blog for any bit of time probably noticed that I changed my profile photo yesterday afternoon.  I've read others' posts and comments about their profile photos here and there- but I've never been overly concerned about mine as a rule.

I'm not a cute guy or anything- some stuff just can't be helped!  So us lesser-attractive folks must rely on our razor-sharp wit, superior intelligence and wry sense of humor to get us through this crazy world of ours.  … (6 comments)

Sex offenders welcome?  Not here.

Sex offenders welcome?  Not here.
No sex offenders here
I wanted to make sure folks were clear about where I stood on this.  I want both tenant prospects and owner prospects alike to know that I won't rent to a sex offender- period.
There are a number of things that are flexible when processing an application- whether an owner will accept a pet depends on the specific pet, whether a prospect would pay a security deposit equal to one month's rent or two depends on the specific prospect's credit history, etc. … (11 comments)

Yet another avoidable Central Florida death.  This one occurred under the watch of Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker. May God bless Daignault's family and the pedestrian's family.
Troopers: Pedestrian hit, killed in Brevard County
Florida Highway Patrool troopers said a pedestrian was hit and killed in Brevard County Saturday night. The crash happened shortly before 9:00 a.m. on State Road 3 at Spruce Avenue, in Merritt Island.
A Toyota Scion, driven by Colette Daignault, struck the pedestrian, according to troopers. FHP said the pedestrian, whose identity has not … (0 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...sort of
Some may have seen the photo above in a post of mine from years past, but many may not have seen it. For the "haves" and "have nots" alike, I've used it again- as it's a very special photo for me on this special day.
Most will recognize this as a map taken from an accident report- one I had 15 years ago today. On July 25th, 1997, I had the first seizure of my life- behind the wheel and going 55 mph. This diagram shows the path my car travelled … (2 comments)

Underwater owners still singin' the blues...
Some things just don't seem right- never have, probably never will. One of those things is how some folks enjoy laying up in their homes without paying a dime for as long as their luck holds- while those choosing the path of right in looking to honor their mortgage obligations while underwater struggle and struggle.
A number of programs over the past few years have seemed like just the elixir to cure the ills of the latter- but high hopes have disappeared as quickly as the … (2 comments)

Aurora's no Columbine, Sanford no Selma
Like many Americans, I was at a loss for words when I first heard the news out of Aurora, Colorado last week.  The news that the opening-night excitement of one of this year's blockbuster films had been trumped by an actual tragedy of epic proportions was (and remains) truly disturbing.
We've seen what's sadly become a bit of a routine when things like this occur:  interviews with the (alleged) killer's friends and neighbors that can't imagine him doing anything of the sort, school teachers that … (6 comments)

When no signs is a good sign

When no signs is a good sign
We hear a lot of phrases with regard to "signs". "....looking for a sign", "I've seen the signs" and "I see no sign of..." being but a few. We're always looking for signs- but when is it good not to find any signs?
We'll bounce from the literary world to the literal one now. I'll predict with a bit of confidence that anyone trying to exit a driveway near the stretch of signs above would welcome a day without "signs".

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #28
Wow.  This isn't the first of these apparent "suicide by automobile" incidents, and I'm sure it won't be the last.  My brother-in-law actually witnessed one of these a few years ago:  a lady stood on the shoulder smoking a cigarette, and she stepped in the path of a tractor-trailor when there was no chance of it slowing down.  When he stopped to try and render aid, the cigarette was still smoking.
It's surely a tragedy- and one where I have to say that the victims are the driver of the tractor-trailor … (0 comments)

Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #27

Here's another installment from my popular series documenting some of our Orlando area's most preventable of tragedies.  This one falls under the jurisdiction of Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.  As frequent visitors know, I believe pedestrians should be on sidewalks and in crosswalks.  I know- funny concept.  That said, I've come to have less and less sympathy for those walking into traffic- and more and more for those motorists who try to avoid the "froggers" to no avail.  Indeed, it is them that I've come to consider the true victims … (0 comments)

It's Kegerator Thursday!
As everyone that's spent a decent amount of time on the road showing properties will tell you, you never know what awaits behind that door.
Could be a pitbull, could be a property your tenants have trashed (or are in the process of trashing)...could be pizza boxes under a bed or a brown pool in the back.
Or...it could be The Kegerator...

Volusia County man killed in pedestrian crash
Well, here we have yet another death occurring under the less-than-watchful eyes of Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson and Deland Police Chief Bill Ridgeway. As with all of these 26 cases thus far, it wouldn't have happened if the pedestrian had remained on the sidewalk or crossed the street when and where legally entitled to do so.
May God bless the family of this victim- and may God bless and comfort Linda Williams and her family in the days, … (0 comments)

One of the duties I've taken very seriously this year is my place on our Orlando Regional Realtors Association (ORRA)'s Candidate Screening Committee.  A number of folks joined me in looking to do our best to vet candidates seeking election to local school boards- as well as those seeking seats on city and county commissions, state and U.S. congressional offices and the office of Orange County Sheriff.

Not necessarily this drunk- but how about one that's just a little liquored-up...or slightly intoxicated?

It's a great day, America... Today's been set aside on our calendar as a day to celebrate American patriots- men like George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson who by word and deed alike embodied the best "...who more than self, their country loved."
But as we honor our patriots of the past, we should also pay a bit of mind to an "un-patriot" of today- for this particular one could very well be doing our republic a great deal of harm.

Los Angeles prosecutor won't file charges against ex-Commerce secretary: Seizure is no crime
I'm neither a supporter nor a detractor of former Commerce Secretary John Bryson. Quite frankly, I'd never even heard of him until the recent string of news stories involving his having 2 auto accidents that were apparently caused by his having a seizure behind the wheel.
The San Gabriel (California) Police Department? Reports say they sought to charge Bryson with felony hit-and run for his accident- though supporting evidence for the charge was scant at best.
