adhd: ADHD 2.0 by Edward Hallowell and John Ratey - 11/26/22 11:26 AM
ADHD 2.0 is Drs. Hallowell's and Ratey's latest collaboratively-written book. It's the simplest of their books that I've read, with a focus on updating and explaining concepts Hallowell and Ratey first introduced in their fundamental Distraction series, and a second focus on providing detailed, easy-to-try tools for managing ADHD symptoms when those symptoms interfere with a person's contentment or day-to-day life. And it's FABULOUSLY encouraging - Hallowell and Ratey and two of the BEST clinicians in the world at teaching ADHD-abled people that their organizational weaknesses can be balanced by tremendous creative and productive strengths.

I used to immediately recommend the Distraction … (3 comments)

adhd: A Radical Guide for Women with ADHD - 11/25/22 11:50 AM
Sari Solden, MS and Michelle Frank, PsyD in A Radical Guide for Women with ADHD, a New Harbinger self-help workbook, teach self-validation. They approach their mission from deeply intimate perspectives: both women live with ADD, and both have dedicated their professional lives to supporting ADD-abled people. The authors examine many probable life-shaping aspects of an individual's experiences, from early childhood through middle-age, and gently and humorously show readers what those experiences may have embedded deep in a person's mindset, often destructively. Solden and Frank dissect the "I AM BAD" scripts that can cripple anyone, leaving anyone afraid or struggling to succeed … (1 comments)

adhd: A Plea to the Overly-Ambitious, or, Clients, Let Me Do My Laundry - 05/14/22 05:17 PM
A plea to the overly-ambitiousMy client cancelled 1/2 hour before the appointment. I'd already been traveling for 1/2 hour, was 1/2 way there, in such heavy rain I didn't feel quite safe. My client's cancellation was extremely reasonable: s/he'd had a medical procedure the day before and was still feeling shaky. This wasn't a "AWWWW, I dunn wanna!" which I might have encouraged him/her to push past.

Here's my plea: my client KNEW this was a highly likely reaction to the procedure. My client had already pre-emptively cancelled others of our sessions the minute s/he'd scheduled a medical commitment. I'm annoyed that … (2 comments)

adhd: Women with Attention Deficit Disorder Sari Solden - 03/17/22 08:43 PM
Women with Attention Deficit Disorder by Sari Solden had a powerful influence on me years before I became an Organizer, after a close friend asked me to read it so I could better understand her world. And now I can share a more informed opinion of the masterpiece.

adhd: More Attention, Less Deficit by Ari Tuckman - 08/27/18 08:24 PM
I’m puzzled by my reaction to this book. Ari Tuckman is a renowned, compassionate ADHD clinician. I intend to take some of his on-line courses, offered through my professional societies. All of his advice in this book is excellent, built upon many years of experience. It’s also written in an extremely ADHD-appropriate structure – short articles, lots of formatting to highlight key points. And I’m just not sure I see how my clients with ADHD are going to translate it to action. Not because they shouldn’t. Not because they can’t: they are entirely capable. But because they won’t?

As I read this book, … (2 comments)

adhd: Delivered from Distraction Edward Hallowell - 02/01/18 03:32 PM
Edward Hallowell is an extremely gifted writer. His work is lyrical, poignant, often funny, and always to-the-point and accessible. I seldom want to write a review which is nothing but quotes from the book under consideration, but I had to fight the impulse this time.

Instead, I will simply urge everyone who has any interest in ADD/ADHD to read this companion edition to Driven to Distraction. Driven can be broadly described as “My reader thinks s/he has ADD, or thinks someone s/he knows has ADD, but isn’t sure. I’m a guide to ‘Now what’.” Delivered is far closer to a compendium … (0 comments)

adhd: Driven to Distraction by Drs. Edward M. Hallowell & John J. Ratey - 12/05/17 06:23 PM
Driven to Distraction by Dr. Edward Hallowell, a world-renowned expert on pediatric ADD and himself a person with ADD, and Dr. John Ratey, a Harvard Medical School Neuropsychiatrist, is a poignant, at times lyrical, message of hope for ADD-abled people and their neighbors, colleagues, friends and family. It is mandatory reading for some of the certifications a Professional Organizer can obtain through professional societies.

This book is a comprehensive examination of ADD, a neurological condition which disrupts people’s abilities to organize information and actions, from diagnosis to treatment. Drs. Hallowell and Ratey provide tools for their readers to begin the diagnostic process … (1 comments)

adhd: ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life by Kathleen G. Nadeau - 03/09/17 07:45 PM
ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life
I had an unusual reaction to this book by Judith Kolberg & Kathleen G. Nadeau, a highly-regarded ADD coach. This is an excellent resource for ADD-abled people because it is explicitly formatted for people with ADD - they can usually read it, when other traditionally-formatted books on the subject might not work for them at all. I LOVE to read. I had a horrible time trying to read this book. It was HARD. It was almost as if, because, at least as far as I know, I don't have ADD, the book was fighting against me. … (2 comments)
