northern virginia: Here is a 'Them Them' to Lake Anne Nursery Kindergarten (LANK) in Reston - 08/26/08 02:34 AM
I might be a funny one to write a tribute to a preschool since my 'baby' is in middle school, but I am so warmed by the way that this local preschool has touched so many people.

Anyone who has read my blogs knows that I grew up here, in Reston, VA. We moved here when I was in 2nd grade, so I did not go to preschool here.  A lot of my high schoool friends did, however, attend LANk (as it is known--or 'Lankie' as our family calls it).  The original founders were parents of my contemporaries.
All three … (0 comments)

northern virginia: Photos from South Lakes Village Center in Reston,Virginia - 08/15/08 03:50 AM

With a cup of coffee in hand, I strolled last week down to the dock at South Lakes Village Center.  I took these photos because they reflect how peaceful being by the lake feels--even on a hot and humid day.
If you are interested in seeing which merchants are at the SLVC, you can go  to the website: http://southlakesvillagecenter.com/
There are currently 10 properties for sale on the lake in the South Lakes Area (also includes Lake Audubon) These properties range from a 2 Bedroom condominium, listed at $525,000 to a beautiful contemporary detached home $1,230,000.

northern virginia: Lake Views in North Point, Reston - 08/14/08 10:30 AM

Last Friday I went out and took some photos of areas around Reston. These are some shots taken by Lake Newport in the area called North Point (also referred to as North Reston).  There are homes that surround the lake, but there is a path that goes around the lake for the enjoyment of all.  This part of the path is around the lake, although parts of it wind in to the surrounding neighborhoods before returning lake-side.
If waterfront living is something that interests you, there are currently two waterfront properties available, both are single family, detached home. One is … (0 comments)

northern virginia: Reston is a 'Best Places to Live 2008-Top 100 City' - 08/08/08 01:03 AM
Ranked number 37 on this years's CNN Money List   http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2008/snapshots/PL5166672.html , Reston is a well-rounded, well-educated community within close proximity to Washington D.C., Tysons Corner, Dulles International Airport, Reagan International Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport.
What used to be a sleepy little bedroom community has become a vibrant urban/suburban destination.  At the center of Reston you will find the Reston Towncenter.  The original plans for Reston focused on "Village" Centers for shopping, but as the community has grown the development and growth of the Reston Town Center has given the residents a central meeting location.  The Town Center is the site … (4 comments)

northern virginia: Wolf Trap is for Kids, too! - 08/06/08 09:23 AM
My kids are getting older now and I am not constantly faced with finding  new 'outings' to keep them entertained (now I want them to stay in!).
One of our favorites, when they were younger was to go to Wolf Trap for the performances at the Theatre-in-the- Woods. I wish I had thought to write about this sooner, because it looks like this is the last week/weekend for performances this summer
Tomorrow through Saturday you can take them to see 'Bash the Trash' Trash Jam and Steve Roslonek (more information at http://www.wolftrap.org/Home/Find_Performances_and_Events/Performance/08TITW/BashtheTrash.aspx.)  There are charges for these shows, so go on-line … (0 comments)

northern virginia: How I work with Relocation to Northern Virginia - 08/06/08 04:06 AM
Moving can be scary.  You have a lot of choices--you probably have a new job or career.  You may not have friends in your new community, which will mean not only will you have to find and meet new friends, but you have to pick an area that will allow you to do that. You may know where you need to be generally, but not know the area well enough to be specific.

As an Accredited Buyer Representative, I am often your first 'touch-point' with your new city, town or community.  You may know the area where you want to … (0 comments)

northern virginia: A Great Outing for Redskins Fans! - 07/25/08 06:02 AM

northern virginia: Another Delightful Evening at Wolf Trap! - 07/17/08 03:56 AM
For anyone lucky enough to live in Northern Virginia and within a reasonable distance of the Wolf Trap Foundation  for the Performing Arts, please make it a priority to pick a concert or a show to attend this summer and GO!
We went to see Earth, Wind & Fire last night with some good friends.  The show was spectacular, the park was beautiful and the location cannot be beat if you live in Northern Virginia--or even metropolitan Maryland or DC!
Many concert-goers opt to purchase the more affordable lawn tickets and have a picnic while enjoying the music. If you go … (0 comments)

northern virginia: The Reston Festival is this Weekend! - 07/09/08 12:05 PM
Back when I was a kid, the Reston Festival was the highlight of my summer. I vaguely remember Lake Anne festivals, but really it really  sticks in my mind when it was at Browns Chapel.
These days you will find it at Reston Town Center, but the spirit of the festival remains true to the original goals--bring Restonians together to celebrate the culture and people of Reston.
The Festival is being held this weekend, Saturday July 12, 2008, 10 am to 10 pm and Sunday, July 13, 2008 , 10 am to 7 pm.  You can get more information about the … (0 comments)

northern virginia: Ardently Greening Northern Virginia - 06/27/08 08:20 AM
Today, two local Northern Virginia papers came out with articles about 'green' remodeling companies which both featured my husband's company, Ardently Green!  My husband, Bob Weatherwax, along with his partners started this company in response to many homeowner requests to help them make their homes more energy efficient. Their primary company, Ardent Homes, does home remodeling in the Northern Virginia area.
The first article was published in the Washington Business Journal and was written by Vandana Sinha. The link to the article is:

northern virginia: What are my Favorite Things About Living in Reston, Virginia? What are Yours? - 06/23/08 02:19 AM
I am a life-long resident of Reston and would not change it for the world.  What is it that makes Reston so special? I have assembled a list below of some of the things that come to mind. I know that I did not cover everything, but I gave it a shot.
My friends and neighbors: We actually know all of our neighbors and celebrate life's events with them. My oldest told me she won't have a party if we go out of town because at least 6 nearby neighbors would call us on our cell phones! They help us celebrate … (9 comments)

northern virginia: Hot Fun in the Summertime...Keep the Kids Safe at the Pool! - 06/18/08 05:48 AM
Last weekend there were several drownings in the Northern Virginia/DC Metro area and I don't want to see anymore. Now that school is out and the pools are open, it is critical that we all remember pool safety rules.  I was a lifeguard growing up, and I find that to be one summer job I just cannot let go! Some of these rules are obvious, but some are ones that I think don't get enough attention.  Most of these rules pertain to private pools. Always respect all of the rules of your public pool--they are there for a reason!

northern virginia: Fresh Produce and More...every day of the Week in Northern Virgnina! - 06/17/08 03:55 AM
Saturday Morning I made my almost-12 year old run errands with me. Our last stop was at the Lake Anne Village local farmers market in Reston. I could tell by his gait as we left the car that he was less than eager.  He had a blast!  Fresh food, snacks, plants and more...what's not to like? He now told me he wants to go every week. I told him that in our area (Fairfax County, Eastern Loudoun areas of Northern Virgnina) we are fortunate to have one of these markets almost every day.
Here is a list of local markets you might … (2 comments)
