photos: A Dubious Before and After - ActiveRain Photo Challenge - 06/10/17 02:09 PM
Dick Greenberg , one of our best photographers here on ActiveRain I think, challenged us to a BEFORE and AFTER look at a real estate photo. Thankfully the challenge due date was extended given the issues with the photo uploader.

I sold this house last June to clients who had bought it less than 2 years ago, realizing the size was not really what they wanted, and they were moving to a new home, a challenge to do in our market when a purchase depends on a sale. The home was in beautiful shape and they did a pretty good job of … (41 comments)

Old Telephone

I spied this old telephone hanging on the wall at the Roxbury Mountain Maple facility in Roxbury NY a few weeks ago and had to grab a photo. I'm not sure how old it really is (there was no sign), but I'm guessing it might be from the early 1900s. Sure is a contrast to the phones we have today

Snow, Rhubarb and the Catskill Mountains

We were in the Catskills in Roxbury NY this past weekend visiting family for a wedding, and despite being the middle of May the weather was pretty winter-like, with temps one day in the high 30s and heavy snow flurries both Saturday and Sunday.

From this Southern California guy there were plenty of words! The views were pretty nice, however.

photos: Almost Wordless Wednesday: Underwood Typewriter - 05/04/16 02:58 AM

Oh, my, how things have changed. I wonder if some generations even know what this is?!

This Underwood typewriter was spied during a visit some years ago to the Learning/Visitor Center at Crystal Cove just north of Laguna beach. Crystal Cove is a collection of historic cottages on the beach at Crystal Cove State Park. It's a fascinating place to visit.

photos: Rural California Mailboxes - Before and Now - 07/01/14 02:13 PM
We've been driving by these rural California mailboxes on the way to the desert for almost 4 years now.
I drove by many times before I finally stopped to grab some photos.

We were shocked on a trip to the desert back in April to see that they were all gone, save this one (below). I stopped by today on my roundtrip to and from Palm Desert dealing with a for sale property to take a photo.

I miss those mailboxes!
I have to wonder what happened - home mail delivery now? Individual boxes at the … (14 comments)

How Now Not-so-Brown Newport Cow?
I am traveling in Rhode Island for business, and then 5 days vacation on Cape Cod. Currently I am in the Newport area, and after dinner last night, and then again today, took a drive around the famed Newport mansions and "cottages."
It was very cloudy, rainy and a bit foggy so the views were not so spectacular, but I came upon a massive farm (I'm sure it has a name - it might be the Hammersmith Farm, childhood home of Jackie Kennedy) with these cows in the field in the pouring rain. They were worth … (22 comments)

photos: Moon Over the Mountains in Palm Springs - 03/23/14 10:45 AM
We were in Palm Springs, in the California desert, over the weekend for wedding. Visiting with our daughter, son-in-law and the grandkids was a big part of the fun.
The house we were staying at had gorgeous views of the mountains from the yard and the house.
I spied the moon setting over the mountains late Saturday morning and was able to capture a couple of decent photos. It was pretty dramatic in the deep blue sky. So glad I actually was paying atttention instead of being glued to my iPad.

Sometimes Just 1 Photo in the MLS May Be in The Client’s Best Interest

I may be wrong about this, but there are some times when having just 1 photo in the MLS listing may actually be in the client’s best interest.

I saw a house almost 3 months ago that had just come on the market. My relocating client from Maryland was very interested because the solo photo…of the front…was very attractive and the home was in an area that she liked. The home was a traditional sale, not a short sale or REO, and there no red … (47 comments)

Which Post Got the Most Clicks in 2013?
We all know content is important, indeed essential, to our blogging success. And there is a wealth of stuff to write about, real estate related and not, depending on our strategy and our interests.

It’s useful to know what posts are getting the most attention so you can continue building on that success. But it’s not always obvious which articles will, and do, garner the most attention from others here on ActiveRain as well as consumers.

AR has asked the question “Which Blog of Yours Has Received the Most Clicks … (27 comments)

Adoramapix, A Neat Gift Idea for Clients, Family and Friends
Photos are a wonderful way of remembering friends, special events, our travels, and our clients. And in our digital age most of us never lack for a wealth of photos to use

I recently used Adoramapix to create a memory book for some wonderful clients and very good friends whose home I just sold.

The photo is the cover of a 76 page book filled with photographic memories of their Carlsbad home, the community, their friends, and the new city they moved to. OK I went a … (6 comments)

Rural Mailboxes in Southern California
I pass by this collection of mail boxes on my way to and from the California desert. On my most recent trip last week I had to stop and snap some photos. So different from the mail boxes, as far as groupings go, in our congested coastal area in Carlsbad.

And much more interesting!

I started noticing all sorts of mail boxes, rural and otherwise, as a result and may start a collection of mail box photos just for fun. Perhaps a Pinterest board?

Oceanfront Property in Mexico – Everything You Could Want
I spied this on the bluff overlooking the ocean on a beach walk when we spent a few days at the beach in Mexico last week at San Antonio del Mar.

It had everything you could want for a beach home – killer views but not likely to have erosion issues given the location, satellite TV, laundry, and AC (open windows and ocean air). No close neighbors, either.

Simple living but an amazing site.

This was a sunset from where we stayed a few hundred feet … (8 comments)

Cheesy and Crappy Apartments for Rent in Culver City Los Angeles CA
My daughter pointed these out to me this morning when we were visiting up in Culver City. They are adjacent to each other, on a busy street corner, at Overland and Woodbine in the Palms area, one facing the main road and the other facing the side street.
I had to stop by to snap a photo on the way to the freeway to head home.
The Chee Zee Apartments, in particular, are interesting. Did you catch the name of the management company?
What's in a name??

Mom and the Kids
We caught the first glimpse of Mom Morning Dove and the kids today up under the eaves at the front entrance to our house.
While it's  protected are, it seems like a dumb place for a skittish bird to build a nest, but somehow she made it (as she did last year with 3 broods of 2 young ones each) and survived people coming and going, and porch lights with sensors.
The parent doves provide great entertainment for our cats, who watch them come and go from the living room window, and no doubt the kids will be leaving the … (9 comments)

Animate Your Relocating Buyers’ Interest with Animoto
I specialize in relocation, as a niche market, in part because I enjoy it, but also because I’ve made 4 major moves (over 1000 miles) with kids, cars, cats, dogs, and 2 jobs, so I know how to do it well.

I’ve also worked on relocation from a corporate perspective – setting up relocation programs, relocating employees in and out, and have used a couple of corporate relocation programs through my wife’s former companies when we moved to and from Minnesota. I get it.

But the point of my thinking here … (15 comments)

photos: The 10 Photo Commandments - 01/11/12 03:02 PM
The 10 Photo Commandments
Real estate photos for marketing a listing effectively are a huge deal – we all know that, as does the buying public. Sadly, many in our profession appear to be clueless on this issue, or don’t care. There is simply no excuse in my opinion in this age of digital photography for crappy photos, or lack thereof. None!

Here is my 10 Photo Commandments List for sellers that I just created and have now added to my pre-listing package, and plan to include in my listing presentation.

Making sellers aware that bad or very … (26 comments)

Only in California on the Freeway? Perhaps Not
I saw this vehicle the other day on the 805 freeway and felt it warranted a photo (yes someone else took the photo).

Look carefully – what do you think?

First, my impression is that this is pretty savvy marketing. Tons of people will see a car with advertising, especially on the road, so it could be a great way to get your message out.

Of course you have to be a careful and courteous driver or you might find it working against you. Cutting people off, speeding, … (18 comments)

photos: The End of Christmas Day, and I'm Pooped - 12/25/11 04:04 PM
The End of Christmas Day, and I'm Pooped Man oh man, it’s been a tough day.
So much to do. Presents to unwrap, food to cook (smoke tri tip, grilled salmon with dill mustard sauce, roasted cauliflower with raisins, breadcrumbs and capers, sautéed asparagus in garlic and truffle oil), family to enjoy, especially that grand-daughter getting exposed to her first Christmas. You can guess who the center of attention was! There must be at least 200 photos and few vids and the night is not over.
Hard to believe Christmas has come and almost gone, and there wasn’t even any time … (29 comments)

Why Would You do That to Your Seller?
Recent observations and experiences, when helping some buyers find their perfect home, and searching for properties in the MLS for several families that are relocating to the area, prompted this post.

One has to wonder sometimes about how some agents think, or don’t, about their clients. Some appear to have lost sight about their responsibilities.

WHY would you include not 1 but 2 different bathroom photos, both with only a toilet in view and the toilet seat up, on an $800,000 home? I’m not sure what you are trying to … (20 comments)

photos: HAPPY THANKSGIVING to All From Carlsbad California!! - 11/24/11 08:26 AM
I was visiting my Mom and sister in West Chester, PA a couple of years ago in the fall and found these turkeys up on the roof.
My Mom’s house is a 3-story 1750s colonial so they were WAAAY out of reach.
There were also a couple up in the trees and 1 standing on the table on the patio, although my photos did not turn out all that well.
I thought it an appropriate card to doctor up for the Thanksgiving holiday.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
