We love to garden and grow food, which is very easy to do in Haiku Maui. It's nice to have friends who share this passion, and bring us new plants to try. Over the years we have incorporated a lot of great herbs into our gardens. From right to left: chili peppers; oregano; turmeric; my chickens! Mike brought us Hawaiian chili peppers which are probably some of the hottest peppers you can find. My cute chicken house in Haiku Maui - happy chickens! My laying chickens are now happily housed in their own little chicken coop at the end of our yard where we can keep an eye on them. You might remember these hens when they were in their "chicken tractor" which was a pretty good setup until they got full size. It was a bit crowded for all 8 of them at the time. Happy Easter from Haiku Maui - come and get your farm fresh eggs! Wishing everyone a Happy Easter weekend with lots of fun things to do. We'll be busy gathering all the eggs from our 8 new hens who are very productive, and the 6 old hens who are in semi-retirement. It's always fun to see how many eggs get laid each day. These new layers are really paying for their keep, with 7 or 8 eggs a day. The old girls aren't so great but it's hard to kick them out since they have been good producers in their time. … (5 comments)

My Haiku hens are growing so big, look at them now! We got 8 chicks two months ago and I posted some pictures of them here in their cozy starter home. It seemed so big and roomy back then. Look at them now! These 8 hens are soon going to need a bigger house. We plan to move them into the chicken coop in another month or so once they are big enough to outsmart any mongoose that comes around. These new chicks will be laying eggs in the spring in Haiku Maui. We're not waiting until spring to get some new chicks, we're getting them started now so we'll have eggs in time for Easter 2018. It takes about 6 months before they start to lay. These are White Rocks and Ameraucanas, and there are many more types of egg laying breeds.
