That was a question for the Mayor of Maui and his answer is in the Maui News.
---> The improvements are coming soon - on some roads that really need it: Upper Kauhikoa Rd and Kaluanui Rd in Haiku.
We look forward to better driving conditions in Haiku, Makawao, and Pukalani.

It was a small event this month, with only 4 properties to preview in Pukalani, priced from $669,000 to $895,000. Olinda is a region of upcountry Maui that's located above the town of Makawao. If you drive up Olinda Road from the crossroads with Makawao Ave. you'll go up past the Oskie Rice rodeo grounds and Seabury Hall campus. It's a delightful drive along a winding road that climbs higher and higher amidst towering eucalyptus trees and open pastures. At the very top is the Waihou Spring Forest Reserve with hiking trails through the pine trees. Kula 200 is one of the premiere neighborhoods in Upcountry Maui, situated where Pukalani meets Kula, and technically it's in Pukalani but it sure feels more like Kula. Street names in Kula 200 include: Aulii Drive; Aulii Place; Poha Place; Lealea Place; Hoopalua Drive; Welina Place and Alokele Place.
Lots of space: This subdivision was created in the 1970's as an Agricultural subdivision to allow owners to build a house and cottage on a few acres. In our MLS system, Makawao includes the village of Haliimaile, and the Olinda area above town. First I'll give the general statistics, then I'll narrow it down to just the homes in Makawao town.

makawao: Aloe trees growing in Kula Maui Hawaii

I've often seen these strange looking trees growing in Kula Maui and wondered what they were, until I learned they are members of the aloe family. You can find them growing upcountry in the cooler climates such as Kula and Makawao.
Apparently you can grow them easily from a cutting that's been allowed to dry out for a week or two first. They prefer a dry well drained soil on a slope, which explains why they like the Kula region.

Did you know agave plants grow on Maui?
I was quite surprised to see this field planted with agave while viewing a large estate for sale in upcountry Maui Hawaii. Why not grow agave plants? They seem to be doing well and probably don't need a lot of water and maintenance. Maybe this crop could be planted in the central valley where the sugar cane used to grow.... organic Maui tequila could be huge!

Makawao and Pukalani Maui are so close together they share a zipcode. There is some open space between these two towns, and the Maui Community Plan aims to keep it that way. For now let's just lump them together for a quick market update. This hip new restaurant at the Pukalani Terrace Center will serve you up some organic and locally sourced healthy food. Pukalani Terrace has a good variety of places to eat and they'll let you sit outside on the sidewalk, which can be pleasant. How refreshing it was to see the 4 new listings featured on the December Realtor Caravan this month. Fidelity Title sponsors our weekly events that cover the north shore, and Upcountry Maui. With nothing over $540,000 it was a stark contrast to the Paia/Haiku December caravan the previous week where nothing was under $1M. You really can't beat this part of the island when it comes to affordable housing with a friendly small town atmosphere.

Fresh Smoked Pork from Makawao - a roadside treat
If you're looking for some fresh smoked pork, made from wild mountain pigs, look for this sign across from St. Joseph's Church in Makawao, Upcountry Maui. Lucky me I spotted the sign today and pulled over. For $20 I got a nice 2 pound bag with lots of smoky greasy strips of pork. The flavor is so good, with natural smoke and other seasonings. Straight from the mountain, into the smoker, and onto my table... I like that. This is how we do "sustainable food" on Maui.
