cary: Favorite Fall Scenes in and around Cary, NC, 2010 - 11/24/10 03:56 PM

It looks like the rainy weather over the next few days will force the issue and the trees in Cary will lose most of their remaining leaves, and their remaining fall color.  How could we complain?  This has been one of the most splendid falls many of us can remember over the last few years.

Everywhere I go, I think I need to pull over and shoot 100 snapshots.  And I have a ton already.  But, the color is so fleeting, and when it is gone, we are into winter.  Now, of course, it is a North Carolina winter, and … (12 comments)

The park was busy the day I was there with kids all over the play equipment.  A nice fall day will do that in almost all Cary … (0 comments)

cary: Cary, NC: Stormwater Retention Ponds Protect our Rivers and Streams - 11/21/10 01:56 PM

Most newer subdivisions in Cary have some sort of stormwater retention and management structure to protect surface water quality.  These structures can be puzzling to people who come from areas where such runoff management practices are less common.  Older towns often did not have tight stormwater and erosion control regulations that we see in the Cary NC area.

The ponds can be quite unsightly in a newly developing subdivision after a hard rain. But, if the silt is in the pond, and not in the stream the pond empties into, the retention pond is doing at least part of … (4 comments)

cary: Morning Light with my Coffee on a Fall Day in Cary - 11/18/10 12:30 AM
We have a common tract built house in Cary, with many of the typical compromises that come from plucking a plan from a page and plunking it onto a plot.
Yet as time goes on, I begin to see how fortunate we were when we bought it.  It is nearly perfectly situated for enjoyment of the natural light.  The light swims around the house and plays in the trees from dawn to dusk.  From the common living areas, the daily show is most pleasant

In the mornings, the early daylight is filtered through the trees on the south side and lights up the breakfast nook where I … (10 comments)

cary: Fall, 2010, in the Cary, NC Area - 11/15/10 12:02 PM
Every year I grumble to my wife that Fall slipped past and I haven't snapped photos of Fall Color around the Cary area.

..Cary
Not this year.  She was patient over the last week, as I slipped out to snap a few shots as often as I could.

Well, she laughed pretty hard when I told her I needed to get some dawn shots.  Early morning. Before coffee, even.  I wonder what that was all about?

cary: Cary, NC: Farm Ponds are all around us - 11/14/10 10:03 AM
Farm ponds are all around us in Cary, Apex, and most of Wake County.
North Carolina is a farm state, and that includes Wake County, even though many farms have been developed due to our rampant growth.
Farmers needed a reliable reservoir of water besides their wells to feed livestock, water crops, and for fire protection. And in more modern times, many ponds have been added because of the beauty they bring to rural homes.
If you keep your eyes open, little gems like this are much more common along Wake County roads than you may realize:

cary: Polybutylene Pipe Leaks and Unreasonable Standards Conflict 11/14/2010 - 11/14/10 07:36 AM
Ok, so we popped a pinhole in the hot water line away from the water heater.

Sure, it needed to be fixed.  It was getting the wall all wet.  So, fixed it was.  Now the wall is dry.  And Mrs. Bureau of Standards wouldn't sign off on the fix.  Not buying it.  I don't get it.  The wall is dry, you know?  Someone needs to set some expectations here.

Mr. BS (coincidentally the same initials, but they stand for a different name...) scratched his head and after a run to the Cary Ace hardware store, devised an advanced fix.  How proud … (16 comments)

cary: North Carolina Rocks! Gems and Minerals, too! - 11/11/10 01:45 AM
North Carolina has a rich and diverse geologic history.  It can be fun and fascinating to explore.

The leading gold producer prior to 1849?  North Carolina
Largest emerald crystal ever found in North America?  Found in North Carolina
Not to mention garnets and rubies among over 300 gemstone varieties!
In 1823, North Carolina became the first state to fund a geological and mineralogical survey.
And you can still pan for gold in Western North Carolina.
And there are more fun geological facts at those NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources links.

cary: Fall Arrives Right on Schedule in Cary, NC. In Early November! - 11/10/10 01:00 AM
Ever the warm weather lover, even I get eager to see some fall color in the trees after a while.  And, while Fall is lovely in Cary, it seems like  trees don't color up for us until almost winter.
This year has been no exception.  The Mrs. and I have been talking about how long the greenery is staying green.  I ran her out for an early meeting this morning, and she mentioned that we might soon see some Fall foliage.  And, when I got back to the house, I was welcomed home by a Bradfor Pear that is starting to catch on fire.  … (3 comments)

cary: Incurable Deficiencies + Soft Market = Seller Distress... - 11/08/10 03:04 PM
A tough market really has the ability to pound home harsh lessons to Sellers, even in one of the better markets around, like the Raleigh Cary Area.
One lesson being taught repeatedly is that properties with incurable deficiencies, issues that won't be fixed with a coat of paint or a few shingles, have been difficult to sell at any price.  Bargain hunters have their limits, too.
Steep Driveways, proximity to power lines, backing to highways or to commercial nuisances are some of the issues that make a home very difficult to move without massive price reductions, if they move at all.

cary: Toting Groceries up a Flight of Stairs in the Garage? - 10/25/10 10:53 AM
How many steps are there form the garage to the house?  Can you tell from the street or from a photo?
These examples illustrate one indicator.

When you see that the bottom of the garage door is well  below the threshold of the front door, it is obvious that the homeowner will have to "make up the difference."
This home has about 9 steps from the garage floor level to the level of the front door threshold.
That means the owner has to carry groceries and other stuff upstairs to the house.  9 steps worth.  I ask my clients whether they mind … (6 comments)

cary: "Does the house come with appliances?" That can be a benefit. Or not. - 10/20/10 03:57 AM
Plenty of buyers scratch together funds to make a down payment and cover closing costs, and still need some funds for unexpected issues.  So every penny counts.  And digging deep for appliances can deplete discretionary savings quickly for some folks.
So, they want to know if the appliances convey.  The answer is, "They are negotiable."  But, buyers should not assume that a home will come with range, refrigerator, washer and dryer.  If there is an over the range microwave or a built-in dishwasher, the standard Offer to Purchase and Contract includes them as fixtures.  If a "slide-in" range is present, local custom in … (6 comments)

Carolina Hurricanes Home Opener, 10/27/2010:  Where will you be when the puck drops?
Having just scored a bargain ticket, I will be there.  And I expect a full house, so traffic in Raleigh and Cary and getting in and out of the RBC Center at evening drive time should be a carnival all its own.
Television just will not be good enough...

One of the toughest things for a ticket purchaser who hasn't been to a Canes' game is getting a good idea of the view from the seat.  Lots of folks say "There isn't a bad seat in the house."  … (4 comments)

cary: When Good Smartphones go Bad... - 10/12/10 03:05 AM
When Good Smartphones go Bad....  It happened to me.
You know, these things are quick.  Very quick.  High Energy.  Sometimes smarter than we are.
My lovely HTC Evo4G phone started listening to voices I could not hear, and I lost her attention.  I tried all the tricks, On/Off, dumped apps, remove/reinstall battery, factory reset.  Yada, yada.  Nada!
And, when I would touch her, anything might happen.  She was utterly unpredictable. Emails all went out to "Qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq" which I think is not a valid email address on this planet.
Jim O'Donnell called me yesterday.  That may never happen again.  Afterwards, the phone called him back three … (28 comments)
