copyright: Pinterest? Attribution is NOT Permission. - 03/21/12 01:32 AM
Here's an advertising attorney who has some pithy input on Pinterest, and PERMISSION is a pertinent concept.

"...And others have correctly pointed out that posting other people’s pictures without permission could be problematic."
"No, You Can’t Just Post Other People’s Stuff"
"For consumers, the likelihood that someone will challenge your right to content is probably low. For a business, the risks are much higher for two reasons: 1) commercial use (in other words, for business) is offered less protection; and (2) companies have deeper pockets.
If a company takes an image that belongs to someone else and pins it … (11 comments)

copyright: Seth Godin chimes in on Copyright. - 01/12/12 02:57 AM
Almost every time I have to talk to another real estate firm about swiping my photos, I hear, "But it wasn't copyrighted."Did you see this?  No?  Whoops, you should be reading Seth, particularly if marketing is part of your career...

"..PS as soon as you make something and fix it in a tangible form, you own the copyright in it. No requirement that you register it with anyone. If you tend to gather up information, content, images etc, from the internet to fill in your Activerain blogspaces, or to present as your comments, I suggest you read up on the activities of a firm named "Righthaven,LLC."
©
Righthaven, LLC, has been suing people, lots of people, for copyright infringement.  And, they have been collecting.  The whole story presents a significant amount of food for thought regarding how safe you may be from suit, if you regularly indulge a hankering for someone else's stuff to pass on as your own.

copyright: REBLOG OF LENN HARLEY: COPYRIGHT INFORMATION FOR ACTIVERAIN MEMBERS! - 09/30/10 04:12 AM
I don't think I need twenty five words to introduce a reblog, in appreciation of Lenn Harley's ongoing efforts to enlighten or warn ActiveRainers about copyright infringement on the internet.  This intro is fluff.
The Reblogged post on the other hand is NOT fluff.  Read and Learn.

COPYRIGHT INFORMATION FOR ACTIVERAIN MEMBERS!
COPYRIGHT TIME.  Several posts in the past few days about copyright and some pretty risky advice contained in some, made me think that it's time to do the copyright thing again.
I'm not an attorney.  These posts reflect my experience in pursing … (0 comments)

copyright: REBLOG MAUREEN MCCABE: Does "Re-Blog" allow you to share content on your... - 07/28/10 02:12 AM
Maureen is always thinking, a diversion that takes a great deal of stamina in my experience.  What is the appropriate use of Reblogging on ActiveRain?
Does the permitting of Reblogging by the original blogger give license to the Reblogger to use the content in any way, anywhere, they see fit?   I think not.  I think "copyright" still applies to the content once you get past the gates of AR, for sure.
Is all "viral" good "viral?"  Not necessarily, and I don't think being allowed to reblog also delegates to me the authority to plaster someone else's content all over just because I can … (8 comments)

copyright: REBLOG OF MIKE SAUNDERS: Still Posting Content Without Permission - Look Out! The Copyright Troll is on Your Trail - 07/23/10 12:29 PM
Mike Saunders makes a post that should give some "Copy-Pasters" pause.  We now have Copyright Trolls," roughly analogous to Wild West Bounty Hunters, profiting from "catching" copyright violators.
And business, unfortunately, is brisk.  Due to a lack of respect for others intellectual property, it is a target rich environment for the bounty hunters.

I find it a bit amazing that with the guidelines here on Active Rain and the numerous articles about copyright violation, there are still some who will post content without permission. Well, if you are still doing it, here is something that might make you want … (4 comments)

Reblogged, as this post is now ****FEATURED**** in AR Group "Plagiarism and Content Theft for Fun and Profit."
Great discussion of the topic.

Folks with good humor, and integrity regarding intellectual property rights, creative rights, trademark, copyright, etc, and who like, or at least tolerate, small children and dogs are invited to visit.

copyright: REBLOG OF LENN HARLEY: A COPYRIGHT MYSTERY. . . . THE CASE OF THE MISSING SCISSORS. . . A COPYRIGHT WARNING! - 03/13/10 10:01 PM
New policy from Mike:  Reblog good posts regarding copyright issues and content theft.
As usual, Lenn lays it out clearly, without beating around the bush.  Hoping that someone who sees my blog and doesn't see hers (What a concept?!) and learns something due to reblog.
Thanks, Lenn for another pointed post, particularly regarding misunderstanding of the function of "Members Only" on AR.

copyright: Surrendering to Photo Theft to Pimp your Blog? TinEye is a great tool! - 02/03/10 02:47 PM
Recognizing that everyone is doing it, swiping photos for their AR blogs, stealing music and movies, "liberating" anything that isn't nailed down on the internet, you may have by now determined if you are going to be competitive, you might as well tool up for the trade.

Well, TinEye is a great tool.  TinEye is a reverse image search tool engine.  TinEye has catalogued over 1 billion images.  And, it has the right price tag:  FREE!  Heck, that is SO cheap it feels as good as swiping it!
TinEye has a great browser plug-in that works quite well with Internet Explorer … (21 comments)

copyright: REBLOG of Nicholas Goglucci's Post: Digital Millennium Copyright Act - Bloggers Beware - 01/07/10 11:37 PM
Just wanted to reblog this one, for those who don't see Featured Posts, or read Nicholas Goglucci's blog.
As a matter of fact, if Bob Stewart has to delete "hundreds of violations each week," Nicholas's post should probably be reblogged by a few hundred AR members who care about creative rights.
I truly wonder how many violators:
1.  See little risk of being caught, ergo little risk of consequences of stealing content.  Keep your eye on your purse around these folks.
2.  Just don't care.  Keep your eye on your kids around them...
3.  Don't know it is wrong to take someone … (9 comments)

copyright: COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS NOT A FORM OF FLATTERY! - 05/20/09 12:09 AM
Many thanks to Lenn Harley for once again very clearly defining copyright and laying out her approach to theft of her on-line content.
It is fascinating to see the cavalier responses she repeatedly receives from those who infringe.  I have had my own photos cut and pasted and posted on line from Flickr by other agents, and it is dismaying to say the least.
Thanks, Lenn:

Inspired by a thoughtful post by Jacob Clayton, it's time for an attitude change about copyright infringement.
Folks who have had their copyright protected content (any original writing, image, photo, video, etc.) copied and published by another person, usually have pretty … (7 comments)
