raleigh: Cary, NC Real Estate, The battle for Affordable homes in Cary - 05/11/07 04:40 PM
Averge new homes in Cary, NC cost about $500,000.
That is not good enough for some Cary or Wake County or North Carolina lawmakers.
One way to raise the average cost of housing is to make the entry level cost of housing higher, raising the average from the bottom up with unnecessary additional fees.
Three current proposals and movements are coming together to make this less than lofty goal a reality.
1.  Cary is now proposing to design home facades.  Having been criticized in the past for being "Cookiecutterville," Cary leaders now are dabbling with proposals to meddle with what they see as overly repetitive design in new … (2 comments)

raleigh: "Foreclosures are for Rich People." - 05/04/07 07:24 AM
I get the question routinely.  The exchange goes something like this:
"Can you help us find a foreclosure home?"
The answer is, "Yes.  I can.  Why do you want one?"
Most of the time I hear, "Well, we want to save money."  Hoping to get a deal, or similar motivation.
Most often it is a young couple looking for a first home.  And I have to tell them the grim truth about our Wake County foreclosure market.
"O.K.  Do you have your mortgage lined up?"  No point in shopping for a home if you haven't shopped for the money.
If not, they need to backtrack and take … (11 comments)

raleigh: Buyer asks, "What's the black stains on the roof of so many homes?" - 03/02/07 11:38 AM
One of the first things a Cary Buyer relocating from the North notices is the black stain that develops on many roof surfaces in the Triangle area.  And they want to know if it is a problem, or if the roof is degrading.
The stain is cosmetically unsightly, but harmless to the shingles.  It is caused by an algae, and actually is the algae's waste.
You will see it in areas of a roof that stay damp a little longer than areas that quickly dry.  It is prevalent on the north side of a home, shaded areas, and valleys that hold water just … (6 comments)

raleigh: Raleigh, NC, Real Estate...Timberlake Subdivision...Private lakes and Privacy! - 02/10/07 12:32 PM

Timberlake was partially mapped in the 1940's as a small subdivision outside Raleigh, North Carolina.  It is blessed with lakes.  The subdivision was originally laid out to include an airstrip for the homeowners, which later was sacrificed for the construction of homes..Over the years it was enlarged and more phases and streets added, but the focus remains the beautiful lakes:

Today, Timberlake is a mixture of 1950's homes and modern 1990's homes.  All homes share the beauty of the four private lakes, with many lakefront homes enjoying the year round waterfront paradise.

raleigh: Cary, NC Temperance and the Railroad - 02/10/07 12:00 PM
A settlement called Bradford's Ordinary began in 1750 in what is now Cary. However, the man credited with founding Cary was Allison Francis "Frank" Page, who was its first developer, mayor, postmaster and railroad agent.Page-Walker Hotel
Page and his wife, Catherine "Kate" Raboteau Page bought 300 acres here in 1854. He named his development after Samuel Fenton Cary, a prohibition leader from Ohio. Cary was incorporated in 1871, several years after the Seaboard and North Carolina railroads formed a junction in Cary.Page, whose main business was a sawmill, laid out the first streets of Cary and built a hotel. What became known … (2 comments)

raleigh: Raleigh NC Real Estate, Raleigh's gem, Historic Oakwood, is a link to the past - 02/07/07 01:38 PM
Within walking distance of downtown Raleigh and North Carolina government complexes, Historic Oakwood is an area of several blocks of homes.  "They don't build them like that anymore!"  Many homes have undergone historic renovation which has saved them from being broken up into apartments or knocked down for new construction.
I DID say "Historic" Oakwood!
And I have more!
History lives in Historic Oakwood!
Many homes show the love we have of older architecture.
