sacramento real estate news: Good Food - Good Company at Akebono's - 03/16/11 02:42 PM

One of the great things I enjoy about ActiveRain is the connection with other real estate professionals, who have expertise and experience in one market niche or another.  Here in the Greater Sacramento area, I have found a great lunch pal, and fellow ActiveRain blogger, Sacramento Short Sale Agent, Elizabeth Weintraub.  Every couple months or so, Elizabeth and I will find a place to hunker down for an hour or so, and share a meal.
Today, we headed to Akebono's at 4960 Freeport Boulevard (near Land Park).  Although there are several locations around town, I hadn't experienced Akebono's.
Recently, I have blogged about Mikuni's Restaurants, … (15 comments)

sacramento real estate news: Your Home is NOT an ATM or Bank - 03/13/11 11:49 AM

Many Real Estate Professionals, have witnessed a repeated theme, when they hear troubled homeowners stories these past several years.  It is the overwhelming number of homes with either a second mortgage added, or a total refinance at some point during the duration of ownership. Essentially homeowners came to believe their house was a ATM or a bank.
Reasons for these refinances and second mortgages vary.  There are those who simply wished to take advantage of available lower interest rates at one point or another.  But, an over-whelming majority of folks currently in hot water with mortgages are those who added considerable debt … (14 comments)

sacramento real estate news: Just 90 Minutes From Sacramento - 03/12/11 12:09 PM
(Slide Show has 7 images)

Sacramento is well known for over 20 museums and attractions, as evidenced by clicking here.  However, after living here all my life, I also have learned to expand my horizons and be either at the beaches of the Pacific Ocean, the Wine Country of Napa-Sonoma, California Gold Country, or the beautiful Sierra Nevada.  All are within an 90 minute drive of my Greater Sacramento home.
The winter snows this season have created extraordinary conditions for those who love to ski.  Among the ski resorts near or at Lake Tahoe, you will find Northstar, a first rate skiing village with fantastic slopes, … (16 comments)

sacramento real estate news: Thoughts For a Monday - 03/07/11 01:42 PM
Thanks goodness, I didn't need to fill up my car with gas this morning.  Although, I know I'm about a half a tank away from needing to do so.  The Valero station on a first major corner near my house, displayed, it's sign displaying $3.83 for regular.  My relatives in Kansas wonder why gas is so much more expensive here in California.  Especially for those of us, living close to ports and refineries.  The answer is two pronged.  California consumes the gourmet mocha latte of gas, because of tough environmental laws in our state.  AND, we also have the highest gas … (16 comments)

sacramento real estate news: An Explosion of Yellow in Gold Country - 03/06/11 08:46 AM

(Slide show has 8 images)
An explosion of yellow is about to occur in Amador County.  The place where it will happen is Daffodil Hill near the little California Gold Country town named, "Volcano."
According to the Daffodil Festival website, the "anticipated" date is Friday March 18th, for this annual appearance of the blossoms.  The season varies each year, depending on the weather.
Daffodil Hill has long been a favorite daytrip destination for me and for my family.  We often pack a picnic and drive the 40 - 50 mile trip from Sacramento.  There are several meandering routes, which will take you there.
I usually travel … (18 comments)

sacramento real estate news: Critters vs. Varmints - 03/03/11 02:01 PM

Do you know the difference between a critter and a varmint?  In my yard, I have a large population of brown squirrels.  They are frequent visitors like the one pictured.  These guys are really cute, and I love watching their antics as they scamper among my trees, and around my yard.  But as delightful as they may be, they are truly varmints.  I say that because they gnaw on things they aren't supposed to.  They like to chew on the corners of my gazebo, and I've caught them red-handed gnawing on the siding near the eaves of my house, while creating a hole … (24 comments)

sacramento real estate news: Red Flags to Marketing and Selling a Home - 02/24/11 11:44 AM
It isn't unusual for real estate bloggers to address the lack of photo quality they see for homes listed For Sale in the MLS, or other real estate marketing materials.  An article titled, "Red Flags: How to Spoil a Home Description" by Michael Estrin for Bankrate.com clearly cemented thoughts many real estate professionals have about the importance of quality photos to assist in marketing homes and properties.  Today's article went on to address an even larger issue - the total absence of photos. As Don Tepper, a Long & Forster Realtor in Burke, Virginia, put it, "One red flag in many buyers' … (11 comments)

sacramento real estate news: Boots and Hooves Meet Dirt in Columbia - 02/23/11 11:46 AM

Although it's currently 10 degrees below normal temperature for Sacramento this time of year, the sun has peeked through to present some decent days.  The gleam of the sun allows spirits to blossom with ideas for coming road trips in days arriving soon.
For those of you, who have been following my blog, you know that I have a fascination for the California Mother Lode - the little towns, and their history.  Several days back, I wrote about Amador City a little treasure along the Highway 49 daisy chain of California Gold Rush towns which make up the richly colored tapestry of California … (29 comments)

sacramento real estate news: Having Fun With Pasties - 02/19/11 01:54 PM
A favorite cold evening recipe for some in my family is Cornish Pasties.  For those unfamiliar with the pasty or pasties, the exact origin of this hearty meal is mostly unknown.  However, the pasty version we largely enjoy today, likely originated in Cornwall.  Cornish tradition claims the pasty was originally a lunch meal for Cornish miners, who ate within the tunnels and subterranean environment of tin mines, rather than returning above ground to eat.
Because the workers were often covered in dirt and even toxic arsenic sometimes found with tin.  They were able to hold the pasty by its folded crust and … (22 comments)

sacramento real estate news: Flat Stanley Attends Greater Sacramento Crab Feed - 02/13/11 04:04 AM

(Slide Show has 7 images)
In the Greater Sacramento area, there are a group of rituals, which are observed this time of year. These rituals are the Annual Crab Feeds, which various charitable groups, organizations and churches host around town.  I really look forward to these events.
Last evening, several members of my family, and Flat Stanley attended one at St. Mel's School in Fair Oaks.  I have a grandkid that attends there.
The parish priest provided the Blessing of the Crustaceans, while wonderful appetizers were being served, and then it was on to the salad, the pasta, the shrimp, and ultimately all the … (19 comments)

sacramento real estate news: A Half Dozen Reasons Your Home Won't Sell - 02/12/11 07:42 AM
Successful Real Estate professionals are experienced in advising home sellers on the importance of key issues, which will keep their homes from selling.  They begin as follows:
1.    Have you overpriced the home?  It is vitally important that you view your property with objectivity.  Divorce yourself from your own feelings about your home, and view it through the eyes of a "buyer."  Pay attention to the Comparative Market Analysis prepared for you by a knowledgeable real estate agent.  Make certain that it INCLUDES short sales and foreclosures.  How does it compare in condition and updating to other properties being marketed or … (14 comments)
