utah highway 12: Neapolitan Ice Cream Mountains Along Utah's Highway 12

Folks, here’s the thing about traveling certain parts of Utah's Highway 12. There are scenes which remind of childhood days at the Saturday matinee. Days where we soaked up black and white Western movies, like “Stagecoach,” featuring John Wayne, against alien looking landscapes with massive rocky spires, etc. The missing component in those movies was color, which was remorsefully absent in black and white flicks of the 1940s era. Fast forward to today’s world. When given the opportunity to actually encounter the landscape, one easily is overwhelmed by exquisite attention grabbing color, at every twist and turn along Utah’s unfurled ribbons … (20 comments)

A journey along Utah’s Highway 12 provides a visitor with an opportunity to visit three National Parks, and three Utah State Parks. In 2009 I crawled into my car, headed east on Highway 50 out of Sacramento to Utah. I tapped into Highway 12 at its southern tip in Utah. The beauty of Zion, Bryce and Capital Reef National Parks was awe inspiring. Ditto, for the Anasazi, Kodachrome and Petrified Forest State Parks!
At Kodachrome I encountered this massive lone Hoodoo standing majestically as a testament to the power which placed it there.

utah highway 12: Where Butch Cassidy Rode

Early yesterday morning, I woke from a dream in which I was riding a horse, and was saddle sore. I had been trying to chase down Butch Cassidy. Somehow I thought if I could stage an intervention and get him into counseling, he might change his ways. Dreams are so funny. . .I jumped out of bed and threw my clothes on to begin another day of adventure along Utah's highway 12. I had big plans to visit the Anasazi State Park near Boulder. I learned the Anasazi Indians sometimes built their homes in pits, as well as interesting above ground structures. But … (20 comments)
