TIPS TO THWART THOSE PESKY PORCH PIRATES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
FIND OUT IF YOU LIVE IN ONE OF THE 10 BEST OR WORST METRO AREAS FOR PORCH PIRATES

'Tis the season when those pesky porch pirates seem to be baaaack with vengeance. And from everything I read and hear, there are more of them than ever this holiday season. With more people ordering not just holiday gifts, but everyday items, on-line there are plenty of opportunities for those pirates to "score." With more people returning to their office to work post-pandemic, there are more opportunities for porch pirates. Did you know that some … (46 comments)

holidays: How Early Is It Too Early To Put Up A Christmas Tree? - 11/26/21 07:54 AM
IS IT EVER TOO EARLY TO PUT UP YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE?
As I've been driving through my own neighborhood the last two weeks, I've noticed that a large number of homes have had all their Christmas decorations up and decorated trees twinkling in their windows since at least one week before Thanksgiving. And it seemed that this year more homes were decorated well ahead of Thanksgiving than in past years.

I was raised with the idea of putting up the Christmas decorations and trees after Thanksgiving... basically in time for Advent, the four week period ahead of Christmas. Unlike many families, we never … (35 comments)

holidays: Labor Day In The Midst Of A Pandemic: What Americans Think - 09/06/20 04:52 AM

Observing Labor Day 2020 In The Midst Of A Pandemic

Most of us are not observing Labor Day 2020 quite in the same way as we have in the past due to the pandemic. Certainly here in the Charlotte region numerous Labor Day traditions such as Charlotte's Labor Day Parade, the Matthews Alive Festival, U.S. National Whitewater Center's Labor Day Festival have all been cancelled. The popular Annual Kosher BBQ Championship is being celebrated in a very different way.

Nonetheless, how ever and where ever you might be spending your Labor Day holiday this year, take a moment to remember why we celebrate … (34 comments)

holidays: Christmas Is About Music... What's Your Favorite Christmas Song? - 12/14/19 07:11 AM

The Christmas Season Is About Music...

What would the Christmas holiday season be without music? Christmas music is a big part of the holidays and it's the only holiday with such a wide range of music so integral to its celebration. I look forward to the music very year and during the month of December my car radio is always set to the station(s) that play "all Christmas music all the time."  I'm certain we all have our favorite Christmas songs. I freely admit a preference for traditional songs like Silent Night, O' Holy Night, Joy To The World,  Hark The Herald Angels Sing, etc. … (40 comments)

holidays: Nina Hollander & Kid President Wish You A Happy President's Day ! - 02/18/18 03:08 PM

Happy President's Day. Today, Monday, February 19th is Presidents' Day, a day we set aside to honor our country's presidents, and in particular, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. A federal holiday, Presidents' Day falls on the third Monday of each February.

Much has been written about both George Washington, America's first President, and Abraham Lincoln, our Civil War President, who is credited with freeing America's slaves. Certainly both men were transformative and giant figures in the history of the United States. It's only fitting that we have a day set aside each year to honor the memories of these men, as well as to remember … (36 comments)

holidays: What's Open & What's Closed In Charlotte, NC Area On President's Day - 02/19/17 06:10 AM
Tomorrow, February 20th, is President's Day. This is one of those holidays where there's often confusion about what is open and what is closed. North Carolina, as a State, is one that does not observe President's Day. So here's a little "cheat" sheet to help you out as to what's open and what's closed in the Charlotte metro area on President's Day:

North Carolina State Offices: Open (but neighboring South Carolina State offices closed).
Courts: Federal closed; North Carolina court system open.
Financial Markets:  Financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, closed. The Federal Reserve is closed so even … (18 comments)

holidays: Flag Day Today, June 14th ~ Happy Birthday To Old Glory! - 06/07/16 07:13 AM
June 14th (that's today) is Flag Day. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the American Flag on June 14th, 1777. Flag Day seems to be a holiday that many people are not terribly aware of -- we don't seem to have parades, we don't get the day off from work or school. So it passes many of us by without any particular attention. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation officially establishing June 14th as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress, even though it's not an official federal holiday.

If you haven't already done so, go out … (47 comments)
