positive real estate professionals: The Garden Is Started - 03/14/09 10:20 AM
I am so anxious for this year's garden that when we had two exceptionally nice days this week, I had to make my move. With last weekend seeing the signs of spring approach thanks to warming temperatures, I searched for someone to till my garden. Last year, one of my neighbors used his full size tractor to plow the new garden space. This year however, the garden had to be tilled using a small tiller as I had built a permanent structure, including the chicken pen and wildflower garden after that initial plowing.
Happily I found Stephen Hicks from his Craig's … (27 comments)

positive real estate professionals: Gorilla Haven -- An Urgent Message - 03/10/09 03:44 PM

Kim Southern of Blue Ridge Real Estate is an unquestioned professional. One thing you may not have realized was that she has a thing for gorillas. Yep, hairy, knuckle dragging gorillas; lucky gorillas! No, seriously, they are lucky to have someone as caring and compassionate as Kim to give voice to their plight. You see Kim wrote a post entitled
Gorillas in Our Midst -- Gorillas Find Sanctuary in the North Georgia Mountains If you missed that post, I would definitely suggest reading it now as it gives some great background information on why this current post is so important. … (0 comments)

positive real estate professionals: Have You Seen These In Your Area? - 03/10/09 04:39 AM

I first saw the Peapod yesterday during a bout of web surfing. I thought these vehicles were very intriguing as the tag line on the manufacturer's page said:
no gas. no emissions. lots of love. (and there is a green heart where the "o" is in love)
This tag line is enough to drive many people to read about the vehicle; so that is exactly what I did. At first glance these vehicles remind me of the Smart Car and other autos we are seeing in the move towards greener cars (and products in general). Though I consider myself an … (29 comments)

positive real estate professionals: Thanks Experts! - 03/09/09 03:39 AM
I have always appreciated a good comedian for their use of levity to make serious points. Jon Stewart, whether you agree with his particular point of view or not, is one of the sharpest wits around. His The Daily Show has been entertaining viewers and aggravating pundits, politicians, and anyone in the publi eye for years. Last week he had a particularly relevant and entertaining commentary on the current economic situation and whether the self-annointed experts are really so expert. This is an 8+ minute video but it is worth watching, so sit back enjoy...

positive real estate professionals: Big Brother, A Benefit? - 03/02/09 03:26 PM
The use of video in our business and personal lives has exploded in the past decade. From videotaping the children's recital to video blogging cameras seem to be everywhere. Many cities have even taken to placing cameras on streets, in police cars, and in holding cells. These are ostensibly to reduce crime, protect law enforcement officials, and suspects. There are the cries of big brother and the loss of privacy but apparently the benefit have outweighed this objections. I would hasten to guess that the video released late Friday afternoon will further protect law enforcement and suspects.

Here is the … (8 comments)

positive real estate professionals: Life Caught In Photos - 03/01/09 10:44 AM
Just before Halloween of 2008, October 27th to be precise, I created a group on Active Rain called Wordless Wednesday. Though I can take credit for bringing this idea to Active Rain, as I explain in the group's description, the idea has existed in the greater blogosphere for years.
I am happy to say that this group has blossomed to 236 members who have posted 800+ photos. It seems a natural fit that many in the real estate industry are quite at home with a camera. As home inspectors, stagers, Realtors, and many of the other various fields, taking photographs is … (17 comments)

positive real estate professionals: New York Post Apologizes - 02/27/09 01:09 PM
Exactly a week ago today, I published a post entitled Race And Politics in which I brought up the subject of a cartoon that the New York Post had published. The cartoon caused a firestorm of controversy. It became apparent that where you fall in the political spectrum, your racial background, and your experience as a member of a racial minority or majority play at least some part in how you might view the cartoon. There are two excellent quotes that I would like to share with you. The first gives a historical looking perspective while the second gives a view … (10 comments)

positive real estate professionals: My Long Lost Relative Has Died - 02/27/09 05:28 AM
Today I received a contact form via Active Rain Real Estate Network. It was sad news and quite unexpected. Apparently R.J. Dansereau an engineer and contractor for the Togo government for years has passed away. The sad and fatal car accident not only took his life but that of his entire family. This unfortunate event has left the Togo government in a pickle so to speak as R.J. Dansereau had been awarded a roads maintenance contract and completed all of the agreed upon work. Unfortunately R.J. (as I like to call him) passed away with a balance owed to him of … (13 comments)

positive real estate professionals: Internet Presence; What Is Yours? - 02/23/09 02:28 AM

When I read this article last week from my business partner Danny Thornton I had one of those Amen! moments. That moment arose not because I didn't already know the truth behind what he was saying but because I was surprised that people in all professions might not know it.
The internet may be the greatest creation in human history because it allows for the free exchange of ideas and information quickly and over great distances. It has often been said that knowledge levels the playing field or is the great equalizer. With the current ability to share that information … (11 comments)

positive real estate professionals: Race And Politics - 02/20/09 01:56 PM
It has taken me a day to figure out what I wanted to say about a cartoon I came across on several blog posts yesterday. To set the scene the cartoon was published in the New York Post by one of their regular cartoonists named Sean Delonas. The cartoon came a day after the tragic attack by a chimpanzee on its owner and her friend in Stamford, Connecticut that resulted in the hospitalization of the two women and the shooting death of the chimpanzee. It also came on the heels of President Obama signing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of … (24 comments)

positive real estate professionals: The Intersection of Sports and Politics - 02/18/09 06:09 AM
Throughout history sports have been the arena where pure skill has carried the day. Whether it is an individual sport or a team sport the politics that separate us have generally dissipated. There are notable exceptions such as the Munich Olympics of 1972 where the nastiness of hate reared its ugly head. There are also positive examples such as Jesse Owens' victory in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin during the tyranny of the Nazis. This is a prelude to a recent disturbing development in the world of tennis.
Yesterday the United Arab Emirates denied the Visa of a qualified player who … (10 comments)

positive real estate professionals: Three Giants Make Positive Moves - 02/11/09 12:56 PM
Today more good news came out of the financial sectors. Testifying before Congress CEO John Mack of Morgan Stanley gave a very well thought out opening statement. You can read more and hear his entire statement HERE. One of the most encouraging parts of his statement demonstrates that at least two huge financial institutions are actively wanting to repay the TARP funds they had previously accepted. Morgan Stanley along with Goldman Sachs have both publicly stated that not only do they want to repay the TARP money, they have no intention of going back to the well for more bailout money. … (6 comments)

positive real estate professionals: International Holocaust Remembrance Day - 01/27/09 07:25 AM
January 27 was recognized in 2005 by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The U.N. resolution rejects Holocaust denials while pledging to fight discrimination. Today in history marks the liberation by allied forces of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Berkenau. It is estimated that the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witness, and other innocent civilians from all over Europe.
Through the works of courageous survivors and victims of the Nazi death camps the world knows the ugly face of such atrocities. It is hard to forget the force of the Diary of Anne … (13 comments)
