From Combined FDIC Releases This Evening 8/21/2009:
I believe this is a total of 18 banks that have failed this year in Georgia, and over 80 banks that have failed nationally since the first of the year. The total estimated cost of Friday's bank failures to the FDIC is $262 million.   This last group of banks came an hour after some of the initial reports were released. Guaranty Bank, Austin, TX failed this evening also. Guaranty Bank had 103 branches in Texas and 59 branches in California. ****BREAKING NEWS!***** I was just checking the evening's business news on line and I read that Washington Mutual the nations largest savings bank was seized by Federal Regulators this evening.  As I write this Blog the story has just broke in the last 45 minutes. J.P. Morgan Chase has agreed to buy their assets!  It is the biggest bank failure in US History!  The office of Thrift Supervision - OTS announced WAMU was seized because it  had insufficient liquidity and was in an unsound condition.  Washington Mutual was one of the nations largest lenders in Options ARMS!

ots: Bank Failure - Another Bank Closed this Weekend. - 08/03/08 03:40 AM
It seems to becoming a pattern that over the weekends, and after the close of business on Wall Street the... FDIC and OTS are closing bad banks.  There is no time to make a move withdrawing money from your accounts late on a Friday night or on a Sunday.  There is also very little discussion of the event in the weekend media or news.  For the most part the weekend event is now shrouded in a veil of secrecy.  I assume they are trying to do this without fanfare, and for each bank that closes there is always a lame public … (30 comments)

Pay attention!!  Big changes are going to be proposed tomorrow in Washington DC that deal with the financial well being of the nation.  Already the plan has opened a very sharp debate an no one is talking but my fear is that it may send out the wrong message that things are so bad they cannot be fixed!

I was searching for some Atlanta local news this evening and I came across something I wasn't looking for.  It seems that as of 3PM today the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation FDIC and the Office of Thrift Supervision shut down a local bank which is Internet based and has no physical branches.  The name of the bank is Netbank based out of Alpharetta Georgia, and it has over 2.5 Billion in assets, and over 1200 employees.  It is the largest bank closure by the FDIC in 14 years.  The last closure of a major bank by the FDIC was in 2001.  … (23 comments)
