History Surrounding the Makapuu Lighthouse

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

The stone image of "Makapu'u " the supernatural woman and another one of Malei are no longer visible but it is said that Makapu'u (bulging eye) was in the form of a black rock. She was a female kapua (flower, blossom, child) who came to to Oahu (Honolulu County) with a famaous voyaging priest.

Malei, another female kapua was a stone set up to attract Uhu (Parrotfish) to the area. They made offerings of Lipoa (a type of seaweed) and also said to be a rock relative of Pele (the fire goddess)

But the Makapu'u Lighthouse is still standing and located on the East side of Oahu high above on the cliffs overlooking Makapuu beach. The lighhouse was established and first lit in 1909 and the light is still operational (as depicted in the picture).

The current use for the Makapu'u lighhouse  is for "Active Aid to Navigation.

The owner is the U.S. Coastguard.

Sally all the lighthouses that I have ever seen have been out on or at the edge of water.  This is the first lighthouse that I have seen up on a hill/mountain.

Woo Hoo, Your photo of the Makapuu lighthouse must have a really interesting  history behind it. This photo would make a great photo bog. Yes? George raised a great issue. One of the original purposes of a light house was to guide ships into a bay or harbour or around a point of land and guide them away from crashing into cliffs or rocks in bad weather with poor visability. Being on a hill or cliff would give this a unique story of how it came to be there.

George: this is the bottom of the cliff (makapuu beach) where the lighthouse is.  It IS on the edge of the water....I was brain dead when I wrote this am...and just got home from Open House where 50+ people came through!  Now that I went back to look...I did write it!

"But the Makapu'u Lighthouse is still standing and located on the East side of Oahu high above on the cliffs overlooking Makapuu beach"

William: There's more...agreed. And this is where the lighthouse is....right on the top...on the edge of the water...which I did write in my post :)

Thanks Jo...I keep missing you!

Thanks Donna: i tried :)

Zane:  Hey there....haven't seen you for awhile or this place is just getting too big :)

Me too Hannah!

Thanks Terrie..you have wonderful stories too!

the photo alone spoke to me like it had a soul... to see one firmly on that cliff translates the strength and devotion it upholds to guide one safely home.
