I've seen a lot of post about people "starting" to work on their 2011 goals. I think it's way too late for 2011, but if you are at that point, try this: Decide where you want to be in five years. It might take a little thought — maybe a lot of serious and honest thought — but you can do it. It's not that far in the future. Then break that five-year goal down into periods of years, quarters, months, weeks, days, and even hours if necessary (like if you have to get children off to school at 8:00 a.m.). Then work those hours and days persistently and consistently. If you really put that serious and honest thought into those five-year goals, and then work those hours and days persistently and consistently, you'll find that the weeks, months, quarters, and years naturally fall into place, putting you right where you want to be in five years. When you do that, you'll also find that it's easier to stay motivated during the year because hourly and daily goals are much easier to reach than yearly goals. It's the old adage of breaking big projects down into a series of smaller tasks. Just as an example, I saw one post that said their goal for 2011 was to get 24 escrow closings. How? You have to break those 24 escrow closings down into much smaller tasks: marketing, networking, advertising, PTA meetings, HOA meetings, neighborhood council meetings, volunteering at the SPCA or Little League, etc. Try it! Good idea to look down the road 5 years... it helps take some pressure off the annual goals as well. We just went over our goals from last year... I fell short in a few areas... but I did take that trip to NYC in the summer that I had hoped for! Happy holidays Jim! Kathy
I just read a comment by Russel on one of my business planning blogs. He suggested the same thing. Nice that you are both able to see five years out.
Great idea! We are already looking to the future as my hubby will be taking an early retirement in a little less than 3 years.....so our life will dramatically change....especially since we will finally be living together full time! yeah!!! So it is good to look ahead for sure!
Jim,
I've found success with planning 5 year plans, but my real satifaction seems to have been found in achieving our 1 year plans... We are starting to have PLENTY of multi-year projects pushed out now. So I'm excited about seeing that experience change. I so appreciate lasting results.
Best,
Steve
Good Afternoon Jim
Thanks for the post and nice photos. Have a great Sunday.
2015, I imagine the market will have become hot again by then so bettter make lofty goals.
Super idea. I actually did my 2020 goal a few months ago. You're right, thing big, but then build into meaningful chunks.
Jim - I like the way you think-I had a broker years ago who made us do 5 year plans. I also like what Maureen said! Postive thinking!
Jim, without a plan, you don't know where you are going and there's no telling where you end up. Good for you to do some long term planning!
Thanks for getting my attention with this one. Sometimes I get so stuck on the one year at a time that 5 years is perfect. I better get cracking so I can break it on down :)
Excellent advice, Jim. Identifying a goal is the first step... but then breaking that goal down into actionable tasks with timeframes (that turns the goal into reality) is the next step.
Great way to get yourself on the right track to where you want to be! Excellent advice!
Yikes, Jim --- you are very organized! But why worry about 2015 while everything as we know it comes to an end in 2012!
Jim,
Good point. One year may be too short. Anything longer than 5 years is silly.
All the best in 2011. I hope you see good health and enjoy financial prosperity.\
Brian
Great advice, Jim!
Have a blessed and prosperous 2011... and for 2015 as well! :)
