*If You Don't Like Active Rain Server Issues- Widget Check Up*
Great advice! I don't have that particulare widget, but would be willing to fix the issue in advance.
Good Morning, I do not have one but I do appericate the 'heads up' for the problem. Good information to know.
Thank you for the post. I hope others will read it too. I will suggest this post.
Except for my sparkling NASCAR flat and ClustrMap widget, I'm not really a widget person as I think they are often a distraction; however, slow loading blogs are a hazaard to your blogging health
Haven't added too many widgets for the reason you mention, don't want to slow things down. Thanks for the info!
I do hope there's a way AR can delete these after they are obsolete. It would be a shame to have servers crashing due to this.
My blog log was one of my favorite blog tools. I found out they were getting rid of it about 6 months ago and could not believe it!
Katerina,
Widgets can and do cost bloggers readers. The clutter and slow page loads deter some folks from bothering.
Some do have so many widgets they take forever to load. Thanks for the info, I didn't know this was going to be obsolete soon
Katerina - Slow page loads drive me crazy. I hope everyone that uses the MyBlogLog widget reads your post. We all suffer when the AR has server issues!
Thanks for the heads up... I'm not a widget person, but I appreciate the information!
Terrific information! I have been getting reminders about mybloglog for a minute now but I don't have that particular widget on my site. I know a lot who do though!
Hi Katerina, I appreciate you pointing this out about those widgets. I will go and remove mine today, since we certainly don't need to contribute to those servers being down on Active Rain.
Also, Thanks to Brenda Mullen, I found your blog this morning. She spot lighted you and Barbara T. in her post today.
Hi Katerina: I hope this is featured because I have wondered about this, even online in the various comment streams. I see so much "stuff" in the sidebars that I can't believe is necessary. Little avatars of people waving and puppies jumping and down, for example.
I also wonder whether it is necessary to have all those links to FB and other sites, eg zillow, sorry Brad ;-). If they just sit there does the system need to go get the link each time the blog loads. What about those social media buttons that we all have at the bottom of every post, as well as all the buttons for search for homes here?. I wonder if there is a way for AR to standardize those things: eg everyone is given a tested bit of code for the FB interface?
And now folks are talking about vblogging. Very cool and what google loves, but I am under the impression that video takes up a lot of space, especially when it is poorly created. Does linking off to a video, eg on youtube take less resources than storing code on the AR server?
It would be wildly unpoular if AR did create guidelines (a nicer word than restrictions) about what people can put on "their" blogs, but it might be necessary if we are all going to live in this space together.
Hi Katerina, thanks for the reminder and especially educating us what could happen if we don't do it. I'm not happy that bloglog is discontinued, I liked being able to use this to showcase my blog posts on my website. I'm not sure I like what yahoo is proposing as a replacement.
Well I am going right now and taking it down. Thanks for the heads up on this. Will be glad to do our part to keep AR running smoothly.
Leslie- Video blogging when done correctly won't matter to the servers. If you embed the code like from youtube, you are really streaming from youtube and that does not use a lot of space when you have it sized appropriately and the videos should be under like 5 o 6 minutes at the most. I try to keep mine at 2 to 3 minutes. THe slow loading times for videos are not from the system but rather the viewer's internet connection speeds. I find that if I go too far away from my router video takes longer to load up when I am taking recorded classes. But I use video a lot and it is not slowing down my sites. Katerina
I am finally just joining the widget world so I didn't have that service loaded to bother unloading. LOL
