Changes Over A Lifetime

Ever think about the changes you have seen over your lifetime?

I don't changes over a lifetimeknow why but lately I have been just making a list of some of the many things that have changed during my lifetime. Maybe it's because my birthday is in August and as the years mount up, one tends to reflect on the past and plan for the future. At my age, my future is a lot shorter than my past, at least based on actuarial tables. But I have no complaints. Just need to pack a bit more living in the time I have left.

The Continium of Four Big Changes Occuring in My Lifetime

Past Situation Current
public policy allowed for discrimination of racial, ethnic, and religious minorities racial relations public policy demands no discrimination, and includes additional protection based on gender, and sexual orientation. Discrimination still occurs, but when proved, penalties are imposed.
super-8 home movies, talking on the front porch or back yard with friends and relatives home entertainment media rooms, dvd, 7.1 sound systems, HDTV and Blu-Ray systems
Lucille Ball and her husband could not be seen in the same bed only black and white programs, and cigarette commercials tv shows and commercials People doing "it", HDTV and 3-D quality shows, and commercials for products to clean and freshen any and all orifices. (It's good to be fresh and clean and I guess this helps the economy.)
doing one thing at a time, until it is done well activity multi-tasking-screwing up several things at once

Nothing surprising here. Change is inevitable. We evolve as we learn and put into practice lessons that make us better. I was not in the real estate business in the "old days", but I've heard enough about it to be happy that I missed some of the challenges of the past. But I also know that some day, what we see today will be considered the "old days" for future generations.

This is the United States of America. As a people, we are always looking to improve and change. Add a change or too that you have seen over your lifetime. That will make for an interesting list since we all have unique life experiences.

Wayne,

Interesting, thought provoking post.

I can't think of any specific changes other than a wish that people would think before they speak, listen when engaged in conversation, apologize when they're wrong, smile more, lead, invent, chill and live as if their success was inevitable.

Given your comment on packing more life into the time you have left, what would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?

Be Well and Have a very Happy Birthday!

Hi Wayne - One of my high school reunions a few years ago really made me sto and think about all the changes that have occurred since then (and not just the fact that we've all gotten so much older).  A lot of things have improved, like the things you outlined, but some things have suffered.  We don't have so many personal connections any more and it seems we connect primarily on line these days.  I hope that trend doesn't completely take over.

Bill-That is a tough question, because the human condition always provides the opportunity to succeed as well as fail for most situations. Unless the deal is rigged then one can succeed or fail based on how the deal is rigged and if you are the rigee or the puppet master. But to your question- today, looking back I would have implemented a different financial plan and avoided some financial bumps along the way. Thanks for the question. I liked your suggestions too.

Ken-That is the best way to live. There are worse places to live than Tahoe too. I've just passed through that area, but as I recall, its nice there.

Brenda-Thanks for stopping and commenting.

Hi Susan-Some changes have been for the worse, no doubt. Some social issues, as you mention, are suffering, but productivity is up and to some extent health and quality of life are better. Got to take the good with the bad I guess.

Wayne: Your blog made me think back to my childhood. Followed by some quick backward memories my thoughts then went to my 93+ year old mother and the change she has experienced. She seldom talks about the good old days but keeps up with the all fast moving life we live today. Life continues to flow like a stream, sometimes quiet, sometimes rugged but always continues to flow. Enjoy the ride my friend.

Hi Wayne~ Yet another thought provoking post!

Communication has changed dramatically. Cellular devices are simply amazing, even allowing you to see who you are talking to in real time!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WAYNE!!!!

Carl-93 is quite an achievement. That means you come from a great gene pool. Look forward to the future.

Stephanie-Thanks and happy birthday to you too, next month.

Judi-Yes, communications devices have really changed, not to mention social media and sometimes we find out more than we really need to know about others. Thanks for comment.

Interesting table, Wayne.  I think the simpler times were way better.  Less stress and more personal relations.  Oh well.  We can't go back.

That's funny, just the other day this was a topic of discussion.  Kids these days have no idea.... blah blah blah.  At least we can look back and remember how it used to be.  Have a great weekend.

Wayne, Happy Belated Birthday! I may have a few years on you, but I have seen a lot in my lifetime too. Music is the biggest change. Black and White TV to Color TV. Listening to the Long Ranger and Tonto on radio at the kitchen table. Playing those 8 track stereo tapes from the 60s. Alfros from the 60s.  Yes, I have seen a lot too.
