The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth

Ever go on a search engine and enter "blog" as the subject?

If you have, you will find a variety of articles dealing with the vehicle in which you must have at least some interest.  There are many articles dealing with accuracy in blogs and that holds a great deal of interest to me.

I would love to know the truth about a lot of issues confronting all of us today; namely, the Arab-Israeli situation, global warming, and home land security to name a few.  Yesterday I read an article from the local (Fredericksburg Virginia) newspaper dealing with second hand smoke.  Seems that the statistics used for years by the government as being authoritative were skewed tremendously because of the accuracy the statistician was willing to accept.

Being a reformed smoker with five (now adult) children I have punished myself many times for subjecting them to second hand smoke.  Oh well . . .

You know I could write some absolutely bogus information on the subject of real estate on this blogsite and search engines would probably pick it up and someone searching for information about real estate in Fredericksburg Virginia might take it for being the truth and nothing but the truth.  To make it more authentic I could even pretend to be someone else (someone with credentials in-spite of being a totally fictional person).  Ever think "Who is that woman?  I never heard of her before."

Will we ever be able to know the truth about things that should concern all of us?  Will we ever be able to know the truth about situations that have global ramifications if we are not give truthful information about what is going on locally?  Are the values we have held for so many years about being truthful depreciating to mere memories of old men and women?

Wish I knew!

It does take a lot of time to sift through who is saying what, and possibly also why.  Having friends you can trust is one way. Just after 9-11 an Austrian friend of ours called me and asked if I would take the time to answer some questions if he called every week.  Of course I would. Some of the questions stretched my German vocabulary, but we succeeded.  He and some of his friends wanted to know what was really going on in America and how the Americans felt.  Were we scared to go out of our houses everyday? Did we stop flying? He could then meet with his friends, review our conversation, and they'd have a better knowledge of how people across the pond really felt.

I have a friend that finds all kinds of news commentary on the Internet. We always joke about how "It must be true, I saw it on the Internet." :-)

That was the downfall of Pierre Salinger, the former White House Press Secretary & ABC reporter...he based a report about TWA 800 being shot down by friendly-fire which was based on an internet story he found. He lost all his credibility as a result.

The real issue is determining what is the truth.  We all have our beliefs, values and opinions...that, I think sways each of us in deciding what to accept as the truth.

and unfortunately.....truth and opinion and perspective often blur into an unsortable mess.  For any issue worthy of debate, both sides will trot out expert testimony interpreting data to support their argument.  Also there might be more than one correct answer.  Take for instance Sherry's friend who called after 9/11.  Some Americans were scared to fly, others flew because they refused to be told what they could/couldn't do.  I too would love to know the truth on the global warming issue.  After seeing the movie, An Inconvenient Truth, I'm left wondering who's right....and am appalled at how much is hidden by the government for the sake of business. (like your second hand smoke consequences.)

As one of those evil Republicans I would love to answer some of those questions.  But I can't until the year 2078.  Some kind of paper I signed for the Army.  Anyway the real reason I am commenting is this.  If it is in writing is must be true.  That is covered in many sales books and seminars.  We know it to be a fact, because well, it was in a sales book, duh.  But it does remain a fact.  If it is in writing it becomes your reality, until you read the converse.  I commend those who continue the search for the truth.  Most of my "political conversations" or "Debates" end when the other party admits that they will not read or watch any thing that does not agree with their current view.

I make it a point to listen to Air America, even thought I know many things that they say to be wrong, (First Hand Knowledge, been there, done that, touched that which [per them] does not exist) I do this to remind me that if they are often wrong, then the other side, (admittedly) my side, is most likely often wrong too.  Somewhere in between, the truth may be found.

Damn, that is a blog, not a comment.
