“Foodie” Fridays in Austin

Dories picks

Well, we’re getting down to the wire for shopping with Christmas being only 11 days away.  If you plan on doing some last minute shopping & would like to eat before you head out, here are 3 restaurants that serve brunch on both Saturday & Sunday.  You can sleep in just a bit, grab a bite to eat early in the day and shop ‘til you drop!

1.      OLD PECAN STREET CAFÉ               http://oldpecanstcafe.com/
The Old Pecan St. Café first opened in a small building that was built around the turn of the century.  It has a storied past with a list of previous owners including saloon keepers, Chinese laundries and a drugstore with The Café becoming the latest occupant in 1972.   The building that now holds their main dining room was constructed in 1905 as a new hardware store.  The limestone rubble walls were originally part of the Radcliffe Platt Livery that dates back to 1872.  Their brunch menu includes all your favorites: Alaskan Smoked Salmon, Cheese & Fruit Plate, Chef and Greek Salads to enjoy along with Pasta Primavera Salad.  Among the list of entrees you will find Steak & Eggs, Eggs Florentine, French Toast and Eggs Benedict. And for more hearty fare there’s Brochettes Orleans: blackened tenderloin steaks topped with hollandaise sauce or how about Chicken Poppicotti: chicken breast stuffed with spinach, pecans & cheese roasted and then topped with hollandaise sauce.

2.      SOUTH CONGRESS CAFÉ             http://www.southcongresscafe.com/index.php
Influenced by a new generation of local artists, the South Congress Café started in 2003.  They keep their roots in what works in the past, while always striving to challenge themselves with something new and exciting.  The building that houses the restaurant was originally a drug store that was built in the 1940’s.  They did not want to lose the charm and history of old Austin, so the original brick structure is showcased in their bar, with some modern architectural details added.  Chef Trudy has a distinctive menu that mixes together the exotic and the familiar and features wild boar, venison and quail as well as specialty steaks and fresh salads. On their brunch menu you will find tuna tartare: yellow fin tuna, nuoc pham vinaigrette, cucumber, apple, sesame tortilla chips and soy caramel; a salsa sampler of sencilla, morita and arbol served with house made chips.  How about a seafood parfait of scallops, shrimp, chili citrus marinade, guacamole, red onion, bell pepper, cilantro, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and tortilla strips?  And, of course you can’t forget the carrot cake French toast: carrot cake with vanilla egg batter, cream cheese-pecan syrup served with seasonal fresh fruit.

3.      GALAXY CAFÉ                      http://www.galaxycafeaustin.com/
The goal of the Galaxy is not to achieve completion, but to enjoy the process.  Their mission is to provide customers with friendly service and high quality food in a clean and comfortable environment.   And, they succeed.  Every plate of food that they serve is given the same attention it deserves which guarantees quality, freshness and accuracy.  On the menu at The Galaxy you will find the Uptown Wrap: a giant tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon, smoked gouda and sautéed mushrooms & avocado.  If you like quiches try the spinach and feta guiche or the leek and Canadian bacon quiche.  If you’re craving sweets, how about French Toast deluxe- fresh baked bread with strawberries, bananas, powdered sugar & syrup?   If what you’re looking for is more on the lunch side there’s the yummy Galaxy chicken salad sandwich: all natural free range chicken mixed with mayo, walnuts, celery, red grapes & spices served with lettuce, red onion and tomato on a choice of breads.  Or there is the Italian burger that features a patty with sliced prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and balsamic roasted tomato that comes with mixed field greens & pesto mayo on the side. Dessert is equally delicious with either a slice of chocolate torte or a serving of crème brulee. This is a personal favorite of mine!

Whatever and wherever you decide, you’re guaranteed to be fueled and ready to hit the malls and finish crossing gifts off your list in no time!
