FAQ - While you are here, can you also take a look at something else?

Plumbing repairs in SacramentoYou call a contractor and the repair work begins, you feel comfortable with him, and you’d like some additional work done. It makes sense, he’s there anyway and probably more than happy to help out.

This question comes up a lot!

Why didn’t you request this earlier? It is my guess that if the contractor is new to the client, they may not yet be sure that they will want them around any longer than they have already committed to. If the contractor is polite, clean, and well behaved then maybe we will have him look at some other things that need to be repaired.

The benefits of the contractor knowing in advance of the possible jobs that he may be doing are numerous. It is best if the entire project is known ahead of time.

Electrical repairs in SacramentoYou may save some money – If the contractor can get all the things done without making a additional trips, you are saving him time and fuel. I may not have time to leave and get the additional supplies that I could have gotten that morning.

You may save some time – If you have to make arrangement with the dog, or meeting at the site. You will not have to do this as often, the job can be done sooner.

You may be making the contractors job easier – Many professionals will not admit this but if you treat him with respect and trust; that goes a long way with many in the trades.

My job is to get your work done quickly and efficiently, don’t be the weakest link in me getting that done. Help me to be a better contractor; get everything on the table early so I can do what I do best.

Hi Tom,

Kinda like a Realtor being at the home to let me in.

Then being late and saying "Just come by and pick up a key" Really?

I hate that. Being on top of what's going on is the best way to be. Everyone saves time and money.

Have a great day working in the Sacramento area.

Best, Clint McKie

Good advice Tom.  I've found myself guilty of saying "while you are here" but it's not intentional.

Great advice AD Model.  Don't you love looking inside the cabinet to see a receptacle on the wall just under all the water!?

HA!  I suspect that additional work is not mentioned because they figure that, once the contractor is already there, they'll take care of these "little things" at little or no cost.

That is an odd way that some people operate. I can understand it sometimes; other times, people seem constitutionally predisposed to this sort of sideways approach.

Tom -- as you note, if you know all the things they are concerned about, you can make sure you have most of the needed materials with you, even if you don't normally carry them around all the time.
