Ask An Ambassador: Wallflower or Participant

Welcome to ActiveRain!

Now what?

You have choices to make.

You can quietly lurk.  Learn how things work, figure out who the go to people are, the techniques, etc.  Find the tips about how to blog and be productive.

Or you can do a full gainer off the diving platform and go headfirst into participating and learn as you go.

For MOST Rainers, I suspect the wallflower approach is more common.  And every now and then I see some new members who would have been better off taking the wallflower approach!  In particular there seems to be a group of new members wanting to push the "I buy houses and you don't need a real estate agent to sell!!!" business model.  And that business model has its place, and IMO that place isn't this community.  Someone wanting to come into the Rain and push how worthless real estate agents are is about as welcome as a robber walking into a cop's bar.  Things aren't going to end well for the intruder.

And speaking of things ending well, another key choice every new member has to make is Rainer or Rainmaker.  Rainer is the free level of account, Rainmaker is paid, and there's a VERY BIG KEY DIFFERENCE.

If you're a Rainer, your blogging is ONLY published to the members of ActiveRain.  Your posts do NOT get indexed by Google and they're NOT visible to home buyers and sellers.  So you might write a masterpiece about your local market, but your phone will NOT ring because your target audience never had a chance to see the post.  However, if you're on a paid Rainmaker account, your work IS indexed and findable by the public.

So depending on your target audience, perhaps you don't need a Rainmaker account.  If you're trying to provide a service to real estate agents,  Rainer probably gets the job done.  If you want to tell the world how they don't need an agent and only have a Rainer account, you're wizzing into a Cat 5 windstorm.

And once you have a Rainmaker account, how much or how little you participate is still up to you.  Blog daily, weekly, monthly or never.  Comment often or little.  Publish 230 market reports a week with comments disabled, maybe that works for you.

Bottom line, the full benefits of this community come from participating.  Building relationships, having experts just a click away that can help you with problems or support you through some rough times.

Or you can stay a wallflower.  Your choice.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Hello Bill(and Liz) - finding the ActiveRain "secret sauce" is often elusive...kinda like going to that first dance while standing in the corner.  You have presented some good options for stepping out and onto the dance floor.  One foot in...

Good morning Liz and Bill Spear, excellent post. When I first joined ActiveRain, I was actively lurking for months. I didn't even know what I expected but just jumped in. On this platform, we can learn each and every day but most importantly, we can build relationships that will last a lifetime.

I lurked for a long time before making that first comment, and longer before writing that first post.

Hi Bill,
Usually, a short time as a lurker is a good thing... figuring things out how one might fit into it all.  Then it's time to jump right in.  There is a place for everyone in the industry who is respectful of the value others bring to the table.

As for the "you don't need a real estate agent", that's because they don't want the seller to be protected by being represented by their own agent with a fiduciary responsibility to them.

I fear many sellers may be taken advantage of "saving!!!!" money because there's no agent, when the real selling price should be much higher than the "we buy now!" people will admit.

It's all about choice but choose wisely.  I was eaten alive by AR members after my 1st or 2nd choice.  Lucky for me I had a really good sense of humor.  But I agree that if lurking suits newbies best, then it's best that they take that route and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.  We all go at our own pace but when you take that first step it may be helpful to tread lightly.

I was never a wallflower here, but I did just stick my toe in.  I'm happy that the people where in 2008 made me feel welcome... of course I wasn't telling them they were worthless greedy people. LOL.  Within a month of being here I had asked for help on a couple of things and both times people came through with some good information.

We signed up, disappeared for 3 years, then started lurking.  Once the first post was done it got easier.

Hi Bliz I joined in 2006 and did squat until 2008. At that point I drove in from the high board and never looked back. As for the other folks.....they're becomming more and more common in my neck of the woods.  Agency?  What agency and taking fiduciary duties seriously?

Nov 19, 2019 01:32 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Not seeing them much in our area (yet), but definitely seeing more of them signing up in the Rain and not always learning the rules of the road before firing off on members.

Very well said Bill. I was a lurker until I could get the lay of the land. I haven't regretted one moment of it. IMO those who would cast negative thoughts about the worth of agents and embrace that business profile might be better off at one of the other social media sites like, dare I say, Facebook.

Agreed, this isn't really the place to be, especially if they're not springing for a Rainmaker account.  Without it, they're promoting to the least likely audience in the world to actually help them with business.

I am in it for the fun. I enjoy the repartee. I enjoyed learning. I enjoy knowing that real estate is of interest across the U.S. and in Canada but customs, rules, laws and expectations vary. So do the personalities in AR and that is delightful.

There is a wide variety here.  Those that just don't mesh with me are few, and I can intentionally detour around them if I choose.
