2020 Scouting For Food Drive By Charlotte Area Boy Scouts: February 1

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

The collection bags have been delivered throughout Charlotte and Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops from all around the Charlotte metro area in Mecklenburg County will be "SCOUTING FOR FOOD" this coming Saturday, February 1st.

Even in as affluent a city as Charlotte, North Carolina, there are still too many families who go hungry as a result of economic crises. 130,000 Charlotte residents and one in five children in Mecklenburg County live in poverty. Last year the Scouting For Food drive in the Charlotte metro area collected a reecord 265,000 pounds of food! The goal for 2020 is to collect 275,000 pounds of food. Wouldn't it be wonderful to achieve that goal and set another record in 2020?

Local Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Scouts will be collecting food for Loaves & Fishes on February 1st and Charlotte neighborhoods (like mine) have already had some 160,000 brown paper bags delivered to their doors in which to place food donations that will be picked up this coming Saturday. (My bag is already filled and waiting to be put on my front porch on February 1st for pickup.) But no reason to limit yourself to just one bag -- why not fill up a second bag for this terrific cause?

Loaves and Fishes Mecklenburg County

All food collected by Charlotte Boy Scouts will be distributed by Loaves & Fishes through its pantry locations in Mecklenburg County. Loaves & Fishes provides a week's supply of groceries to families and individuals facing economic hardship/crisis. Last year, Loaves & Fishes provided a week’s worth of groceries to over 76,000 people in Mecklenburg County. Almost half of the recipients were children. The Scouting For Food Drive is the largest single drive each year in support of the Loaves & Fishes pantries throughout Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

WHAT TO DONATE TO THE "SCOUTING FOR FOOD" DRIVE:

Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Scouting For Food 2017Most in demand/need are:

  • Canned meats
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned pasta
  • 100% real fruit juices
  • Cereal

  • Pork and beans
  • Corn muffin mix

All canned and boxed foods are welcome. There's especially a great need for low sodium, low sugar, and low fat items. (No glass containers or frozen food, please.) Loaves & Fishes always needs personal care items and diapers in all sizes, as well.

So please be generous this year and contribute as much as you can to our neighbors in need.

By the way, you don't need to wait for the annual Scouting For Food project. You can help support Loaves & Fishes throughout the year by adopting a pantry and/or conducting your own food drive or volunteering at its warehouse. Loaves & Fishes offers volunteer opportunities for both groups and individuals. And, of course, you can always make a monetary donation

How To Double Your Donation's Impact

If you donate before January 31st, your gift to Loaves & Fishes will go twice as far! Lori & Eric Sklut, through the Levine-Sklut Family Foundation, are matching donations up to $25,000. Your donations will help provide groceries for twice as many families

There are homeless and needy people everywhere so to those of us that so much has been given, out desire should be to help those who haven't had our privileges.

This is a great cause and a great need too. I hope 2020 has less homeless people and people in need and with each any every day that passes may there be food, work, and shelter for all.

Hi Nina- our local scouts left a bag on our doorstep this weekend and I have already filled it. When I look at all of the blessings that we have, I also remember those who do not. We have to help.

Such a wonderful lesson for our young scouts and a cause that definitely needs focus right now. Did you see the news about the lines for the affordable housing today? Unbelievable! We really do need to find a way to help - this has gotten so out of hand and I just know we can figure this out.

Hope you have a great week, Nina!

Debe Maxwell, CRS hi Debe... when I first arrived in Charlotte 20+ years ago I was amazed by the level of food insecurity... I continue to be amazed... no matter how many food drives we have and how many pantries and food banks, the need seems to increase all the time. Affordable housing goes hand in hand with people being able to afford the most basic necessities of life... food and shelter.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... I so agree. I don't know how people can look themselves in the face if they don't help... and yet, each year, when I put my bags out on my porch for collection by the Scouts, I can see that on my street I'm in the minority... and it makes me crazy as I live in an upscale community where people lack for nothing.

Joe Pryor good morning, Joe. We have numerous such food drives each year in Charlotte... where someone will come and pick up your donation... no need to drive anywhere to bring it in. And yet, I always notice that those of us who leave a donation on our front porches are in the minority. I don't know how people can look themselves in the face when they don't donate... especially in a community like mine where there's no lack of anything.

I do hope the annual increase in collection results continue for the Scouts in 2020.  I'm sorry to  hear you are one of few who participate in your neighborhood. Something wrong with that picture. D

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD hi Debb... I guess each of us has to make our own decision about how and when to support causes like this one. For me, the issue of hunger in an affluent community is an important one.

Hi Nina:

What a wonderful thing to do to meet the hunger needs in the community. It's pretty appalling how many go hungry in our overall affluent society! And so much food seems to be wasted as well.

Jeff
