State Route 9 runs the vertical length of New Jersey. Before there were Interstate Highways, the Garden State Parkway or the New Jersey Turnpike, there was Rt. 9. The New York Road.
It runs through some of South Jersey's prettiest countryside.
Passing through Galloway Township, north of Ocean City, the New York Rd parallels a now-defunct railway. The restored railway station, however, lives on, and it's home to the best breakfast I've eaten in twenty years. No lie! It's called Shea's Cafe' and Bakery. (Click the link for more info!)
Look carefully at the tripod standing under the overhang. I wish I'd taken a picture of the board.
Expect scrumptious, wonderful breakfasts, including specialty pancakes, six or eight different kinds of omelettes, and as many different kinds of Eggs Benedict.
That's what I chose--Eggs Benedict Surf & Turf, with generous portions of filet mignon and lump backfin crabmeat.
Owner Lou Vasquez is a dynamo. He's everywhere at once, making sure everyone is welcome and well-fed. The staff knew the regulars (among them, our kids) by name.
I was so impressed that I came back the next day, told Lou about the Active Rain community and asked his permission to write a post about Shea's Cafe' & Bakery.
Lou was delighted! South Jersey Rainers, please make it a point to go see him. Can you imagine someone with Lou's energy referring you business?
Sure wish he'd open up another just like this here in Tucson!
